The Counsel, Labor & Employment provides proactive, business-focused legal support for labor and employment matters across Brunswick’s global workforce. The role partners closely with Human Resources and business leaders to deliver practical counseling, ensure compliance with labor and employment laws, support policy development, and lead or contribute to employment-related investigations and strategic projects. This position is ideal for a lawyer with 3-5 years of focused labor and employment experience who demonstrates initiative, strong judgment, and the ability to handle increasing responsibility independently in an in-house environment.

Requirements

  • JD from an accredited U.S. law school
  • Licensed to practice and in good standing
  • 3-5 years of employment law experience
  • Clear, concise, and effective communicator
  • Team player with strong collaboration skills
  • Demonstrated integrity, initiative, resilience, and independent judgment
  • Intellectual curiosity and desire to be involved in strategic projects

Responsibilities

  • Provide timely, practical advice on global labor and employment-related issues, including accommodations, wage and hour compliance, discrimination, harassment, leave management, onboarding/offboarding practices, labor relations, employee benefits, and workplace conduct matters.
  • Monitor and interpret legal and regulatory developments and assist in developing and implementing compliance strategies, tools, and training.
  • Draft, review, and update employment policies, employee handbooks, HR guidelines, and employment-related communications.
  • Provide sound legal advice on employee relations matters, internal investigations, disciplinary actions, and termination decisions, including reductions in force.
  • Manage third-party subpoenas, employment-related charges, attorney demands, and other pre-litigation disputes, including gathering facts and drafting responses.
  • Oversee employment-related litigation, including developing strategy, coordinating with and supervising outside counsel, reviewing pleadings and legal documents, monitoring budgets and reserves, analyzing risks, and advising business leaders on potential outcomes and mitigation strategies.
  • Review and negotiate employment-related contracts, including recruiting, staffing, contingent workforce, and vendor agreements.
  • Provide legal support regarding unionized environments, including labor negotiations and contract interpretation.
  • Promote awareness and compliance with federal, state and local labor and employment laws through training and guidance for business and HR teams.
  • Clearly communicate legal advice, risks, and recommendations in a user-friendly, solutions-oriented manner.
  • Leverage AI and other innovative tools to drive efficiency and process improvement.
  • Develop and maintain positive, effective working relationships with colleagues and business partners at all levels.
