About The Position

As the Arena Stage costume fellow, you will experience the process of mounting a season of shows from research and design, to the build and fitting of the costumes for the shows, all the way through to the point of performances. We are looking to share our professional experience with an up and coming creative with a passion for working in an arts-focused environment. We encourage a curiosity about costume design and/or the management of a costume shop. The ideal candidate for the Costume fellowship will be a hardworking individual who engages with and does not back away from challenges. The position regularly requires social tactfulness, discretion and the ability to function well under pressure. The Fellow should have the desire to work both independently and collaboratively to achieve Costume Department goals; A growth mindset is essential to success. Outstanding written and verbal communication skills are crucial in this role. Some experience in costume design, sewing, costume construction and/or working in a costume shop in either an academic or professional setting is welcome, but not a requirement for the position. Additional expectations: Occasionally, some evening and weekend hours will be required. A valid driver's license is a plus, but not required. Responsibilities

  • Professional development workshops with industry leaders
  • Collaborate with designers on productions and in costume fittings
  • Curate research, paperwork, note taking, and costume " bible "
  • Learn costume technology with drapers and expert artisans
  • Experience millinery and dyeing in the crafts department
  • Maintain costumes and serve on the wardrobe crew
  • Coordinate and curate garments from multiple costume stockrooms
  • Assists with sourcing, styling, fitting, and maintaining wigs and hairpieces.
  • Supports wig fittings, styling sessions, and performer training on proper wear and care.
  • Helps maintain wig continuity through daily upkeep, presets, and show-to-show consistency.
