About The Position

As the University’s largest and most varied academic unit, the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS) is comprised of artists, learners, performers, scholars, scientists, and teachers across 21+ departments, programs, schools, and centers and acts as a central hub where many of the University's disciplines intersect. Nearly all 6,000 undergraduates at the University take liberal arts courses with us, and about one-third of these students declare a first major in a CAHSS program. Most of our departments, programs and schools offer master's or doctoral programs. CAHSS scholars, artists, instructors, staff, and students collaborate in a shared quest for knowledge about the human condition and the development of skills to improve our local and global communities. The diverse scope of CAHSS allows our students to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed at nearly any career in today’s global society. The Department of Theatre within the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences is a dynamic department dedicated to comprehensive undergraduate theatre training via a program of study (BA in Theatre) defined by its commitment to breadth of understanding, hands-on experience, and demonstrated excellence. Our students study a wide range of topics including—but not limited to—Acting, Directing, Design, Playwriting, History, Literature, and Management (liberalarts.du.edu/theatre). This is an internal-only posting for a pre-identified candidate. Position Summary The Costume Program Manager performs duties under the direction and supervision of the Chair of the Department of Theatre. This is a part-time, .75 FTE benefited position which serves as the manager of Theatre Costume Shop, supervising all aspects of costume shop build process including oversight of several student employees. The Costume Program Manager will also teach 3 courses in the Department of Theatre (most likely two THEA 1300 and one 4-credit History of Global Fashion Trends or a similar common curriculum, large enrollment course). They also will costume design one show in our production season.

Requirements

  • BA/BFA degree with emphasis in theatre (management/design/production).
  • 3 years of experience in a professional costume shop, including experience with wardrobe, stitcher, draper, and management.
  • Costume construction skills/leadership: May serve as primary cutter/draper for productions on a regular basis, and/or supervise professional overhire.
  • Language skills: Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing. The ability to present information effectively and respond to inquiries from the university and community constituents. The ability to respond appropriately to conflict and complaints and to direct student concerns to appropriate individuals.
  • Mathematical skills: Comfortable using basic math skills in a variety of tasks.
  • Reasoning ability: Must have the ability to use common sense and to multi-task priorities.
  • Other skills & abilities: Ability to be adaptable and flexible and to develop and maintain good working relationships with a wide range of personality types. Solid computer and organizational skills. Ability to successfully teach/mentor undergraduate students in all areas of costume production process.

Nice To Haves

  • MFA degree with emphasis in theatre (management/design/production) or comparable professional experience.
  • 5 or more years as manager of professional or academic costume shop.
  • 5 or more years of professional or academic design experience.

Responsibilities

  • Manage all Department of Theatre costume shop operations; including: Care, maintenance, and storage of finished items.
  • Purchasing card transactions, budget adherence
  • Maintenance of shop equipment, materials, and inventory
  • Teach any combination of: 1-credit costume studio(s) and 4-credit course(s) (EX: History of Global Fashion Trends) amounting to 3 instructor of record instances per academic year
  • Design costumes for one production per season
  • Mentor students in costume construction techniques required for each production
  • Supervise, mentor, schedule, track, and evaluate student work hours and assignments for 3-6 TA’s per quarter
  • Attend weekly production meetings each quarter as needed/requested.
  • Attend/assist in supervision of all technical and dress rehearsals.
  • Attend/assist in supervision of each productions strike.
