About The Position

The Illinois Department of Corrections is seeking a motivated candidate for the position of Corrections Transportation Officer I. The successful candidate will serve as part of the facilities team utilized to transport individuals in custody between correctional facilities operating various types of security vehicles escorting individuals in custody to court writs, medical furloughs and other public locations while maintaining appropriate custody, safety and general wellbeing of all individuals in custody while in transit. Responsibilities will also include assisting with maintaining the facilities vehicle fleet ensuring simple repairs/and or maintenance is up to date ensuring vehicle are in good operational order. Requirements

  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years of high school.
  • Requires one (1) year experience as a correctional officer, or experience in a related security position.
  • Requires a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) – class B with air brakes and P endorsement (for operating passenger transport vehicles).
  • Requires the ability to travel.
  • Requires the physical ability to perform duties assigned.
  • Requires ability to carry a firearm.
  • Requires completion of an approved course in guard training within six (6) months of employment.
  • Requires ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
  • Requires the ability to pass a drug screen. The use of unauthorized drugs, regardless of the position held, is prohibited.
  • Required to utilize digital technology, tools, platforms, and processes in managing and supporting various digital enhancements for greater efficiency, productivity, and digital transformation efforts within the department.
  • Applicants are required to abide by all vaccine and/or other medical standards as set out by the employer.

Nice To Haves

  • Prefers at least one (1) year of experience serving meals to individuals in custody during transport.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of experience preparing written reports related to security/safety workplace incidents.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of experience administering emergency first aid to employees and/or individuals in custody.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of experience working with courtroom procedures dealing with individuals in custody.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of experience in the operation of security vehicles used to transport individuals in custody.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of experience escorting individuals in custody to courts and/or other correctional like facilities.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of experience implementing safety, security, and custodial measures for control of individuals in custody.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of experience performing simple repairs/and or maintenance to a transport vehicle ensuring the vehicle is in good operational order.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of experience taking headcount of individuals in custody.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of utilizing security devices maintaining proper deadlock with individuals in custody.

Responsibilities

  • Operates various types of security vehicles in order to transport individuals in custody from correctional facilities to assigned destinations.
  • Delivers individuals in custody to receiving officials at destination.
  • Maintains assigned vehicle in good operational order while enroute and makes adjustments or simple repairs.
  • Performs other duties per Administrative Directive 01.02.106, Vehicle Coordinator.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
