Corrections Recreation Specialist 2 (Madras) with Underfill Opportunity Deer Ridge Correctional Institution – Madras, Oregon Oregon Department of Corrections Are you passionate about using recreation to inspire personal growth and positive change? Do you have experience in designing and leading diverse recreational programs? The Deer Ridge Correctional Institution is seeking a Corrections Recreation Specialist 2 to create, coordinate, and supervise meaningful recreational activities within a secured facility. Candidates who do not meet the minimum qualifications for the Recreation Specialist 2 may be considered as an underfill in the Recreation Specialist 1 classification. An underfill must meet the minimum qualifications for the lower classification and would receive the pay in accordance with the lower classifications salary range until they meet the minimum qualification for the full position. At that time, the successful candidate would be moved to the higher classification and salary range. The salary range for the underfill is: $4,867 - $5,849 Preference may be given to candidates who can meet the full qualifications. About the Job – Your Role As a Corrections Recreation Specialist 2, you will create, coordinate, and supervise a variety of structured recreational activities. Programs may include music, cultural events, wellness initiatives, and art projects. You will be providing a high level of customer service, streamlining any and all processes associated with running a revenue generating business including hiring, training, holding adults in custody (AICs) accountable for misuse of equipment, reinforcing positive behavior change, and terminating of its workers.

Requirements

  • Must have a valid driver’s license
  • Three years of experience assessing, developing, coordinating, and implementing recreational programs and leisure time activities; OR A Bachelor's degree in Recreational Management, Physical Education or a related field
  • One year of experience assessing, developing, coordinating and implementing recreational programs and leisure time activities. OR 34-quarter hours (21 semester hours) in Recreation or Physical Education or related coursework will substitute for the experience.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and Deliver Programs: Design, coordinate, and supervise recreation activities such as music, art, cultural events, cognitive classes, wellness programs, and self-enhancement workshops.
  • Collaborate for Success: Partner with security and transition staff to ensure programs meet safety standards and support the Oregon Accountability Model.
  • Lead and Mentor: Supervise AIC recreation workers and oversee initiatives like the Positive Action Club (PAC) and photo program fundraisers.
  • Maintain Equipment: Inspect, inventory, and manage recreation equipment, coordinating repairs and replacements using sound budget practices.
  • Support Special Events: Organize and supervise institution-wide events, working with stakeholders and community partners for planning and execution.
  • Administrative Duties: Respond to inquiries, attend meetings, complete required training, and maintain accurate schedules and records.
