The Kent County Correctional Facility is seeking dedicated individuals for the position of Corrections Officer. This role is crucial in maintaining the safety and security of a modern correctional facility with a capacity of 1,477 inmates. Successful candidates will join a motivated, team-oriented group of corrections professionals and will be responsible for both direct and indirect supervision of inmates. In direct supervision housing units, officers will oversee the safety and custody of up to 64 inmates, ensuring a secure environment while promoting positive interactions. Corrections Officers will engage in various duties, including observing inmate activities to identify unusual or prohibited behavior, monitoring medication distribution, conducting inmate counts, and responding to assistance calls. They will also prepare written incident reports, conduct searches of inmates and their living quarters, and supervise inmate workers during recreational activities and visitations. The role requires the ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment in high-stress situations, making it essential for candidates to possess strong interpersonal skills and conflict resolution knowledge. Candidates must reside within 24 miles of the Kent County border within one year of hire. The position requires a high school diploma or GED, a valid Michigan driver's license, and the ability to pass a thorough background investigation and drug testing. The successful candidate will demonstrate a responsible work history and provide documentation of relevant qualifications. The hiring process includes completing the Empco written examination and the Local Corrections Officer Physical Ability Test (LCOPAT). During the initial 12-month probationary period, new officers will rotate through various shifts, including day and night shifts.
