About The Position

This position provides care and supervision of inmates housed in the jail facility. Other duties involved are transporting inmates, juveniles, and mentally ill; performing all intake procedures for incoming prisoners; supervising the daily housing area and periodically must subdue prisoners.

Requirements

  • Prior knowledge of jailing procedures, law enforcement or criminal justice background is a plus but not required. We will train qualified individuals.
  • Must be willing and able to work a variety of assigned shifts.
  • Must be able to perform CPR and emergency first aid.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older at the time of employment
  • Must possess or be able to obtain by date of hire, a valid State driver’s license without record of suspension or revocation in any state and have valid vehicle insurance.
  • Felony convictions and disqualifying criminal histories are not allowed.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Must be able to read, write, and speak English language.
  • Must be of good moral character and temperate and industrious habits.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be able to pass a background check, physical and psychological.
  • Ability to work days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Able to work extra shifts when needed.
  • Able to perform assigned duties while under stressful situations.
  • Possess and maintain the physical ability sufficient to 1.) Able to physically restrain an inmate; 2.) Defend self and others in physical encounters; 3.) Withstand the stress of performing lifesaving techniques.
  • Ability to learn applicable laws, ordinances and department rules and regulations.
  • Possess and maintain good work habits.
  • Ability to establish effective working relations with subordinates.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in emergency and non-emergency situations.

Responsibilities

  • Perform all intake procedures for incoming prisoners including pat searches, data collection record keeping, photographing, finger printing and further processing.
  • Maintains security in all areas of the jail and holding areas. Jailors must physically subdue violent prisoners who may assault, intent on escape, who may be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • Responsible for supervising additional programs: AA, church, probation visits, healthcare professionals, department of correction hearings, ADA, GED, library and recreation.
  • Responsible for knowledge of communications equipment: telephone, paging, teletypes, radio, and criminal justice information system information, records management system, in a professional and secure manner.
  • Perform security patrol of the jail including accesses within the jail perimeters inside and outside.
  • Carry out duties in confirmation with Federal, State, and County policies, and City laws and ordinances.
  • Conduct daily cell inspections and searches when needed. Supervise the daily routine of the inmates including the issuance of clothing, bedding, and distribution of medication and the feeding of all inmates.
  • Ensure the safety and security of inmates and staff, while simultaneously ensuring the security aspects of the facility. The ability to perform emergency first aide and lifesaving techniques.
  • Distribute medication, when qualified. Work with health care professional, inmate sick call, doctors, dentist, assist ambulance, safety, and security of medical risk inmates.
  • Coordinate activities and exchange information with other law enforcement agencies, Department of Corrections, County Attorney’s Office, probation, courts, social services, treatment centers and the public.
  • Responsible for overall physical features of the jail to ensure that heating, cooling, water supply, electrical including emergency generator, and sanitary conditions are continually maintained.
  • May serve as a member of various employee committees.
  • Responsible for a variety of reports and records: daily logs (computer and handwritten) incident reports, discipline reports, bookings, releases, pay-for-stay, predatory offender records, medical records, telephonics.
  • Responsible to transport prisoners to and from court appearances, from other law enforcement agencies, juvenile detention, correctional facilities, and medical facilities.
  • Maintain the upkeep of jail supplies such as: canteen, linen, cleaning supplies, hygiene supplies, office supplies, intoxilizor, and first aid supplies.
  • Responsible for handling money such as: bail money, prisoner accounts, and bonds, cash fines, receipting and recording of all money transactions, issuing checks.
  • Maintain face-to-face communications with inmates while performing a variety of routine tasks ensuring that the jail environment operates smoothly, safely, and effectively.
  • Perform any additional duties as may be assigned by the supervisor to ensure effective operations of the jail and maximum compliance with applicable laws, regulations, standards, and policies
