This position supervises and maintains discipline, safety, and control of residents at all times. Applicants must meet a minimum score on the Corrections Officer test to be considered for an interview. This position is subject to regular rotation of post and/or shift assignment within the facility. The incumbent must be capable of performing the position's Essential Physical Functions. An initial 12-month probationary period is required for new Corrections Officers. Corrections Officers are required to weapons qualify under KDOC guidelines during initial training and on an annual basis.

  • Observe and recall surroundings, events, residents' behavior, activities, and interactions while enforcing policies, rules, and regulations.
  • Interact with residents and co-workers to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Performs searches of residents, persons, and physical areas to prevent and control contraband.
  • Follows established security procedures in controlling visitor, staff, resident, and vehicular traffic to prevent the admittance or exit of authorized persons and the introduction of contraband; and takes and reports periodic counts of residents.
  • Responds to emergency situations in accordance with appropriate contingency plans. Remain calm during stressful situations.
  • Write clear and complete sentences; climb stairs; remain alert over long periods of time; and use physical force to subdue violent and resisting residents.
  • Must be 18 YOA
  • Must possess a High School Diploma or GED
  • No felony convictions; no felony or misdemeanor domestic violence crimes
  • No convictions for possession of a controlled substance or drug paraphernalia in the past 60 months
  • Free of DUI convictions within the past 24 months
  • Pass a background investigation, medical exam, TB test, and drug screen
  • Possess a valid driver's license
  • No convictions for crimes punishable by imprisonment for a term exceeding one year
  • Free of pending criminal charges, indictments, or outstanding warrants
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Valid driver's license
