About The Position

The Illinois Department of Corrections is looking to hire a highly organized and detail-oriented Licensed Registered Nurse, Corrections Nurse I.  This position will be responsible for performing direct nursing care to individuals in a correctional facility.  The successful candidate shall demonstrate a valid Illinois License and good oral and written communication skills, be a self-starter, and be able to carry out nursing assignments pursuant to the direction of medical personnel in a correctional setting.  We encourage all qualified candidates to apply!

Requirements

  • Requires graduation from an approved nursing education program resulting in an associate or diploma degree in nursing or a bachelor's degree in nursing.
  • Requires completion of the Corrections Nurse Trainee program or one (1) year of nursing experience (within the last five years) in an acute care setting; preferred experience includes emergency room care, medical/surgical nursing, and/or ambulatory care.
  • Requires licensure as a registered nurse in the State of Illinois.
  • Requires current cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification.
  • Requires ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
  • Requires ability to pass a drug screen. The use of unauthorized drugs, including cannabis, by an employee, regardless of the position held is prohibited.
  • Applicants are required to abide by all vaccine and/or other medical standards as set out by the employer.
  • Required to utilize digital technology, tools, platforms, and processes in managing and supporting various digital enhancements for greater efficiency, productivity, and digital transformation efforts within the department.

Nice To Haves

  • Prefers at least one (1) year of nursing experience in a correctional setting.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of experience working in mental health.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of experience problem solving in a nursing position.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of experience working on an interdisciplinary team.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of working experience in a leadership role.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct patient care and primary nursing care services.
  • Reviews record keeping functions to check physician orders implemented.
  • Maintains security of medical equipment and supplies.
  • Monitors and maintains compliance of safety and sanitation in patient treatment and examination rooms.
  • Reviews medical records and completes health status forms on individuals in custody.
  • Participates in the Quality Assurance Programs through concurrent monitoring of staff compliance with established policies and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
