About the position

The Illinois Department of Corrections is looking for a candidate to serve as a Corrections Grounds Supervisor located at Sheridan Correctional Center. The ideal candidate will be adept in caring for the facility grounds by maintaining all lawns, yards, roadways, ditches, and facility parking lots as well as the upkeep and maintenance of all lawn equipment and accessories, large tractors, snow removal equipment, and utility vehicles. The candidate must have the ability to work outdoors in extreme weather conditions for snow/ice removal, mowing lawns, patching roads, and cleaning up after storm related damages. Duties will include supervising Individuals in Custody and leading by example and instruction. We encourage all qualified applicants to apply.

Responsibilities

  • Performs and supervises individuals in custody in the maintenance of lawns and drives at the Sheridan Correctional Center, consisting of trees, shrubbery, planting and maintaining flower beds, watering, fertilizing, mowing grass, hedge trimming, tree pruning and removal, pick-up and disposal of trash, pick-up of recyclables, snow removal, etc.
  • Operates and supervises the use of power equipment such as power mowers, tractors, weed eaters, tillers, snowblowers and snowplows used in the maintenance of facility and grounds.
  • Plans and lays out flower beds requiring conditioning and digging of beds, transplanting flower plants, fertilizing, watering and the maintenance of beds during the season.
  • Performs and supervises the maintenance of walks, ditches or water sheds, and roadways around the facility, which includes, but not limited to sweeping, washing off, patching, and removal of snow and ice.
  • Performs and supervises the operation of the landscaping and maintenance of facility grounds.
  • Applies pesticides, herbicides and other toxics used in the maintenance of institutional grounds.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned that are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Requirements

  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years high school.
  • Requires two (2) years of experience in grounds maintenance and gardening.
  • Requires ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
  • Requires ability to pass a drug screen.
  • Requires completion of an approved course in guard training within six (6) months of employment.
  • Requires possession of the Commercial Not-for-Hire Applicator License within the first four (4) months of employment and must maintain active status while in this position.
