About The Position

The Corrections Education Teacher assigned to the corrections campus at the North Central Secure Treatment facility reports directly to the Corrections Education Program Principal in conjunction with the Assistant Executive Director/Chief Academic Officer. The Corrections Education Teacher at NCSTU will be responsible for the daily instruction in the area of building trades/industrial arts for students in a particular school program on the corrections campus, based on individual need.

Requirements

  • A valid Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) Career Technical Education (CTE) Instructional in the area of 2014-Building Construction Trades or; A valid PDE Career Technical Education Intern certificate in 2014-Building Construction Trades issued to an individual currently enrolled in a PDE-approved CTE teacher preparation program for CIP Code 46.9999-Construction Trades requiring the completion of 18 semester hours within the three (3) calendar year validity of the CTE intern certificate. The intern certificate must be issued on the recommendation of a university or intermediate unit participating in an approved career and technical education teacher preparation program; or
  • Will consider candidates with the following: A Bachelor’s degree in a related occupation to building/construction trades and minimum two (2) years of full time paid work experience (4,000 hours) in the construction building trade within the last ten (10) years.
  • a High School Diploma or equivalent General Education Diploma (GED) and a minimum of four (4) years full time paid work experience (8,000 hours) in the construction building trade within the last ten (10) years.
  • The candidate agrees to obtain a PDE Type 01 Emergency Permit with an Educational Obligation and immediately enroll in a PDE-approved CTE certification program for CIP Code 46.9999-Constrution Trades and complete the requirements to obtain a PDE CTE 2014-Building Construction Trades certification.
  • A demonstrated ability to work with at-risk populations, excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work productively with the agency and residential staff are essential.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills are necessary to properly maintain open channels of communication with agencies, school districts, parents, members of higher education institutions, etc.
  • Must have ability to communicate and work effectively with colleagues, co-workers, community agency personnel, and students/trainees.
  • Requires the ability to develop and maintain positive and collaborative relationships using tact and diplomacy and to remain calm in unpredictable situations.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding education programs, students, and parents at all times adhering to the Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) requirements to protect staff and student data.
  • Computer experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook email, internet browsers, and artificial intelligence (AI).
  • Adept at using virtual meeting platforms such as Zoom, Google Meet, and Microsoft Teams.
  • Current, approved Act 34 (PA State Police), Act 151 (PA Child Abuse Registry) and Act 114-FBI Fingerprint clearances are required and must be renewed at appropriate, specific intervals pursuant to Act 153 of 2014 (revised Act 15 of 2015).
  • Current, approved Act 126 Mandated Reporter Training certificate showing completion of a minimum of three (3) hours training every five (5) years.
  • Maintain PDE certification requirements of Act 48 hours for the Professional Education Records Management System (PERMS) specific five (5) year periods.
  • Training in and the ability to implement fully all components of safe crisis management, suicide prevention/Intervention and first aid/CPR are required.
  • Attendance at training seminars and in-service programs identified as important to the operation of an effective correctional instruction program.
  • Perform light physical education activities with the students including, bending, light exercise, throwing, hitting a ball, etc.
  • Navigate the hallways (which may be filled with students) quickly in the event of an altercation.
  • The ability to implement fully all components of Safe Crisis Management.
  • Sedentary: Able to sit for extended periods of time, occasional walking, standing (as necessary) and able to lift and carry up to 25 pounds.
  • Dexterity: Finger movements (computer keyboard, calculator), eye-hand coordination (office equipment, etc.).
  • Is able to move throughout all buildings, floors and grounds.
  • Mental demands: Steady response to unpredictable situations, ability to remain calm and productive during stressful situations.
  • Demonstrates independent judgment, discretion and is able to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
  • The ability to work in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.
  • Ability to travel to various work site locations and meetings as needed.
  • Attendance at work is a requirement of this position; any and all absences must be approved by the immediate supervisor.

Nice To Haves

  • Proficiency in utilizing vetted artificial intelligence (AI) is preferred.
  • The ability to enhance AI skills will be required.
  • Participation in workshops/seminars to increase knowledge in special education.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement methods of instruction and curriculum of planned courses in the area of building construction trades / industrial arts which are typically found within a secondary school setting.
  • Develop and implement a remedial program in measurement to provide instruction for lower functioning students so they may complete industrial arts and building assignments.
  • Provide skills the students can employ to successfully compete in a construction trade job market (or receive credit from their home school district upon their return from the program).
  • Develop and implement a program of instruction designed to provide real life experiences in technology and building trades for the students.
  • Design exploratory courses in a wide variety of fields (e.g. plumbing, HVAC, masonry, carpentry, electronics, alternative energy sources, plastics technology, robotics, etc.) using modules for the core exploratory experience.
  • Assessing student needs and providing support or extra resources to struggling students as well as exceptional achievers.
  • Grading tests, pop quizzes, assignments, exams, and other assessments, and communicating with parents, students, teachers, and counselors regarding underperformance and other concerns.
  • Consistently and accurately document attendance, classroom departures, safety and security concerns, student behaviors, and any other necessary information.
  • When applicable, determine, implement, and document replacement instruction.
  • Seek additional opportunities to work collaboratively with outside agencies to support instruction and promote exceptional learning opportunities to advance course curricula.
  • Regularly communicate with education teams and Department of Human Services (DHS) teams to discuss alterations of the school schedule, student behavior concerns, upcoming projects or tests, and other items of high priority.
  • Integrate technological components to improve lesson delivery, maintain accurate recordkeeping, and develop multimedia skills-based learning.
  • Establish a structured, consistent, classroom management style that promotes a safe and secure learning environment for all members of the educational community.
  • Provide timely, progressive feedback to support goal-oriented learning.
  • Build a strong and positive role in the school environment focused on supportive, collaborative rapport with students, co-teachers, and DHS staff.
