About The Position

The Department of Corrections (DOC) is seeking a dedicated and professional Corrections Counselor 1 to join their team at the State Correctional Institution (SCI) at Coal Township. As a Corrections Counselor 1, you will be responsible for providing professional counseling services and casework management to the inmates at the State Correctional Institution at Coal Township. You will be conducting individual counseling and casework services, as well as providing assistance in obtaining information regarding employment opportunities and community resources. Other duties of the position include developing, maintaining, and presenting records and reports for managing an inmate caseload. In addition, you will have the opportunity to participate in parole planning and making recommendations on re-entry services.

Requirements

  • Three years and six months as a corrections officer, and 18 college credits in sociology, counseling, psychology, social work, corrections, criminal justice, or a related field; or
  • A bachelor's degree in sociology, counseling, psychology, social work, corrections, criminal justice, or a related field; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training which includes 18 college credits in sociology, counseling, psychology, social work, corrections, criminal justice, or a related field.
  • Must obtain Commonwealth Law Enforcement Assistance Network (CLEAN) and Pennsylvania Justice Network (JNET) certification within two months of employment.
  • Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA is required.
  • Must meet the PA residency requirement.
  • Must pass a background investigation and meet Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) compliance requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Provide professional counseling services and casework management to inmates.
  • Conduct individual counseling and casework services.
  • Assist inmates in obtaining information regarding employment opportunities and community resources.
  • Develop, maintain, and present records and reports for managing an inmate caseload.
  • Participate in parole planning and make recommendations on re-entry services.
