About the position

The South Dakota Department of Corrections is hiring a Captain to join their team. This full-time position is responsible for a range of critical tasks that ensure the smooth operation of the facility. The Captain will manage staff schedules, provide backup to the Disciplinary Hearing Officer, develop and manage the Field Training Officer program, oversee staff rotations, supervise various staff members, manage the Timekeeping System, provide mentorship, participate in duty officer rotations, and prepare weekly operational reports. This role requires a dedicated and experienced individual to make a meaningful impact in the field of corrections.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, maintain, and coordinate staff schedules.
  • Provide essential support and backup to the Disciplinary Hearing Officer.
  • Design, implement, and oversee a Field Training Officer program.
  • Manage the bid posting process for staff rotations, promotions, and reassignments.
  • Supervise and lead various staff members across different departments.
  • Oversee the accurate and efficient use of the Timekeeping System.
  • Provide guidance, mentorship, and disciplinary action as needed.
  • Participate in duty officer rotations.
  • Prepare and present weekly operational reports.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Successfully pass all modules of the South Dakota Department of Corrections Basic Training.
  • Possess the physical ability to successfully complete Defensive Tactics.
  • Lift arms above head and kick as high as own waist.
  • Stabilize another person to accomplish a controlled take down.
  • Use arms, palms of hands, shins, and feet to deliver blows.
  • Withstand impact on own body from strikes/blows.
  • Rotate body 90 degrees with feet planted for striking.
  • Get down on one or both knees and up again with multiple repetitions.
  • Be exposed to Oleoresin Capsicum during Basic Training.
  • Must be able to see and hear to observe and respond to potential breaches in safety and security.
  • Seize, hold, control or subdue violent or assaultive persons.
  • Demonstrate body agility, strength of all four limbs.
  • Work in situations involving assaultive behavior and physical control of another person.
  • Deal with individuals with a range of moods and behaviors.
  • Communicate effectively to convey or exchange information.
  • Work in an environment with fluctuating noise and temperature.
  • Willing and able to travel.
  • Willing and able to work various shifts.
  • TB screening is required of all new employees upon hire.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Corrections, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in corrections, with 3 years in a supervisory or leadership role.
  • Knowledge of human resources principles and procedures.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Human relations and conflict resolution skills.
  • Strong understanding of correctional facility operations and regulations.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite and timekeeping systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to make sound decisions under pressure.
