About The Position

The Correctional Treatment Specialist serves as a Specialty Treatment Program Specialist within a Bureau of Prisons Federal Correctional Facility. This role focuses on providing group and individual counseling to inmates suffering from serious mental illnesses, facilitating their successful reentry into society. The position emphasizes maintaining a secure environment while applying advanced treatment techniques to address psychological issues among inmates.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • A degree that includes at least 24 semester hours of coursework in the behavioral or social sciences, or a combination of education and experience equivalent to a 4-year degree.
  • Three years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree in corrections or a related field, or one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in federal service.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience facilitating individual and group sessions for inmates or clients in a pre-release program.
  • Knowledge of principles and theories of human behavior and disorders to provide advanced level treatment for special inmate groups.

Responsibilities

  • Provide group and individual counseling to inmates with psychological problems targeted by the specialty program.
  • Administer questionnaires and conduct interviews to gather information about inmates.
  • Read inmate file records to extract relevant treatment information.
  • Identify deficiencies and excesses in inmates' patterns of thought, feeling, and behavior, and recommend or devise steps to remedy them.
  • Learn and apply new assessment and treatment techniques for helping inmates overcome psychological problems.
  • Maintain security of the institution as part of correctional responsibilities.
