About The Position

The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters! Salary Range: $43,738 - $76,542 This position is assigned to the South Piedmont Community College in Wadesboro, North Carolina, and requires a General Instructor Certification issued by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission. The position is responsible for the delivery and instruction of Correctional Officer basic training for the Piedmont Region of NCDAC Prisons and Division I of NCDAC Community Corrections. The position also supports the delivery of training and instructs in other Regions/Divisions as necessary to meet the evolving needs of the agency. The position supports Prisons CO training in accordance with Community College Consortium agreements and supports and delivers Community Corrections and COB training. The Office of Staff Development and Training (OSDT) provides training for employees across the Department of Adult Corrections. OSDT has a staff of 91 instructors and support personnel who deliver basic training to correction and probation officers. The office also leads firearms training, leadership education programs, general instructor training, and other specialized classes and manages the delivery of the annual in-service training for more than 16,000 certified employees. If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Based upon these factors, a pay increase MAY result.

Requirements

  • A North Carolina NCJA General Instructors Certificate is a requirement for this position.
  • Certification of at least one, Firearms or Controls, Restraints, Defensive Techniques (CRDT) and able to obtain all required specialties within six months from hire date.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of procedures, practices and operation of North Carolina Department of Adult Corrections
  • Crafting and executing PowerPoint presentations, as well as creating word documents
  • Bachelor’s degree and two years of directly related instruction and training experience in the subject matter specialty; or graduation from high school and five years of experience; OR An equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must have current required certification with the ability to maintain any and all certifications required by OSDT, NCDPS, and by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.

Responsibilities

  • Planning, organizing, and instructing blocks of training for COBT, Correctional Officer and/or Instructor Training for NCDAC
  • Drafting course plans and objectives, evaluating, updating, and creating lesson plans and training materials
  • Delivering instruction and collaborating as part of an instructional team, following approved training materials and methodologies
  • Researching materials for course development, developing courses strategies and objectives, modifying course content, and participating in evaluation of courses
  • Certification in Firearms and or CRDT specialty certification with the condition of attaining the remaining specialty within 6 months of the start date.
