About The Position

Eastern Oregon Correctional Institution (EOCI) is seeking dedicated and experienced candidates for the position of Correctional Sergeant. Note 2: one or more of these positions may be offered as a limited duration anticipated to last 12 months, though, may be extended or decreased due to business need. Internal candidates may be considered as a job rotation with their current manager's approval About the Job – Your Role As a Correctional Sergeant, you will be a senior security staff member responsible for overseeing custody, control, supervision, and daily care of adults in custody while upholding the mission of the Department. You will serve as a lead worker, ensuring facility operations run smoothly, safely, and efficiently. You will supervise AICs during movement assignments, monitor high-security areas, and conduct security operations such as transports, searches, and emergency response. In this role, you will also play a key part in staff development, assisting in training and potentially mentoring subordinate staff as a Field Training Officer (FTO). You will lead by example, modeling professionalism, accountability, and behaviors that support rehabilitation efforts. This position is represented by American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME). This position may be eligible for Police & Fire (P&F) benefits through Public Employees Retirement System (PERS), as defined by statute.

Requirements

  • Two (2) years of experience in a correctional security setting where your primary duties were the care and custody of AICs
  • Be able to obtain, within two weeks, an Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) Correctional Certificate OR a Correctional Certificate from another government agency
  • Possess a High School Diploma or GED certificate
  • Be 21 years of age or older
  • United States Citizen
  • Have or Ability to obtain a valid Oregon motor vehicle operator's license.

  • Skill in the use of firearms, restraints, chemical agents, and security devices.
  • Skill in enforcing institutional rules and regulations with impartiality.
  • Skill in evaluating emergency situations and taking or recommending corrective measures.
  • Skill in reading and understanding written policies and procedures and post orders.
  • Skill in writing reports.
  • Skill in operating communications equipment such as two-way radio, telephone switchboard, and public address equipment.
