About The Position

The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters! Salary Range: $37,782 - $66,120 Reporting to the Correctional Lieutenant II, this position is responsible for assigning lower level custody staff to an area or post, evaluating/overseeing officer activities and performance; and ensuring that the custody, security, and welfare of offenders are maintained.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of Facility Operations.
  • Knowledge of Prisons’ Policy and Procedures.
  • MUST be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
  • High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years six months of experience as a Correctional Officer Or Two years of experience as Correctional Officer II Or An equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinating work schedules to ensure shift coverage, implementing operational procedures, and ensuring rules and regulations are followed according to policy.
  • Ensuring that staff are fully trained, and that proper conduct, actions and procedures are being followed.
  • Maintaining facility security through regular inspections to ensure compliance with governing regulations and standards relating to facility maintenance; health and safety of offenders.
  • Communicating effective instruction/direction during drills, distress codes, escapes, transporting offenders, searches and in emergency situations.
  • Conducting and/or supervising searches of offenders, offender living areas, and work areas for contraband.
  • Assisting with facility interviews.
  • Preparing and reviewing reports and completing performance evaluations on subordinate staff.
