About The Position

Sergeant I at Greene Correctional Institution, a minimum custody facility that houses 656 adult male offenders. Supervise subordinate Correctional Officers by assigning staff to a particular post or assignment and responsible for the officer’s activities relating to the custody and welfare of inmates at a correctional facility and off-site assignments. Positions report to a Correctional Lieutenant I and/or a Correctional Assistant Superintendent. Work is performed according to standard departmental procedures and supplemental instructions are received through established chain of command. Assist officers in planning officer work schedules and instruct them in performance of their duties. Make frequent tours of inspection to ascertain that officers are alert, that discipline is being maintained, and that assignments are being carried out. Supervise offender counts and the maintenance of all records so that offenders may be accounted for at all times; supervise periodic search of offender quarters for contraband. Supervise offender assignments when they are transferred from one unit or facility to another; answer phone and relay information to appropriate personnel. Perform other duties pertaining to this level of work as they are assigned.

Requirements

  • High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of experience as a correctional officer; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
