About The Position

The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters! Work in this class involves first-line supervision to Correctional Officer I’s in minimum-custody facilities, increasing the custody and security coverage. Positions assign lower level custody staff to a particular area or post. Employees oversee officer activities and performance and ensure that the custody, security and welfare of inmates is maintained. Employees arrange work schedules to ensure shift coverage, implement operational procedures and ensure rules and regulations are followed according to policy. Positions may at times be the highest ranking custody staff on the grounds or the Officer-in-Charge (OIC). Positions report to a Correctional Lieutenant I and/or a Correctional Assistant Superintendent. The Correctional Sergeant I position is located at Johnston Correctional Institution in Smithfield, NC, which houses approximately 668 minimum custody male offenders. work in this class involves first-line supervision to Correctional Officer I in minimum-custody institutions with restrictive and controlled housing. Position assigns lower-level custody staff to a particular area or post. Employees oversee officer activities and performance and ensure that the custody, security and welfare of inmates is maintained. Employees arrange work schedules to ensure shift coverage, implement operational procedures and ensure rules and regulations are followed according to policy. Positions report directly to a Correctional Lieutenant I and/or the Correctional Housing unit Manager.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of facility operations
  • Knowledge of Prisons' policy and procedures
  • High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of experience as a correctional officer; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.

Responsibilities

  • Ensures that staff is fully trained and that proper conduct, actions and procedures are followed.
  • Maintains facility security through regular inspections to ensure compliance with governing regulations and standards relating to facility maintenance and health and safety of inmates.
  • Gives direction during drills, searches, and in emergencies.
  • May lead staff in carrying out tactical assignment(s).
  • Responds to emergency situations, searches for escaped offenders, and transports offenders.
  • Conducts and/or supervises searches of offenders, their living quarters, and work areas for contraband.
  • Investigates and takes action, where appropriate, regarding security issues, incidents, disputes, and complaints.
  • Prepares and reviews a variety of reports.
  • Completes annual performance evaluations and assists in assessing, evaluating, and implementing employee discipline.
  • Conducts staff briefing sessions.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
