About The Position

The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters! Reporting to the Correctional Programs Director I, this position will provide programs for the rehabilitation of offenders in the prison system.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of supportive counseling techniques.
  • Knowledge of services available to individuals from the community and other public and private programs.
  • MUST be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a human services or criminal justice field from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of experience in corrections or related work Or An equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Supervising the case management responsibilities of subordinate staff.
  • Developing, implementing, and maintaining one or more major and broad programs for offenders. The primary program areas are offender classification, correctional programs, incentive wage, adult basic education, volunteer programs, religion, recreation, and supportive counseling.
  • Working with community agencies to enrich programs.
  • Monitoring the effectiveness of community volunteer workers assigned to programs activities.
  • Coordinating programs activities with custody staff.
  • Working under stressful conditions caused by direct contact with incarcerated offenders who can become physically violent and verbally abusive.
  • Conducting continuous visual and audio surveillance of assigned work area.
  • Preparing written reports and forms reflecting accurate information reviewed from various sources.
  • Operating various office machines accurately.
