The Utah Department of Corrections is seeking dedicated individuals to join our team as Correctional Officers. This role is crucial in maintaining the safety and security of our facilities while supervising offenders in our care and custody at the Utah State Correctional Facility and various correctional centers located in Salt Lake and Weber counties. The job locations may vary based on availability, and it is important to note that this recruitment is not hiring for the Central Utah Correctional Facility in Gunnison. As a Correctional Officer, you will be expected to balance compassion with accountability, ensuring that the environment remains secure while also providing support to those in our care. In your first year, you can earn a total possible compensation package valued up to $92,298.90, which includes a $6,000 signing bonus for those who commit to a two-year tenure with the Utah Department of Corrections. This bonus is structured as a $3,000 hiring bonus upon successful completion of the correctional officer training academy, followed by another $3,000 bonus on your one-year anniversary of employment. Acceptance of these bonuses requires a commitment to remain employed within the UDC area throughout your 18-month probationary period. The position offers paid training through POST certification, and no prior experience is required. There are also various career path opportunities available in areas such as training, transportation, programming, CIRT, and investigations. Additionally, the department provides a contract buyout of up to $20,000 for qualified applicants currently working for another law enforcement agency. The entry pay rate for Correctional Officers starts at $30.00 per hour, with increases based on prior years of Corrections or Law Enforcement experience. Physical fitness is a key component of the role, and initial testing will include a physical fitness test that consists of a vertical jump, push-ups, plank, and a timed 1.5-mile run. The minimum requirements for the physical fitness test include a vertical jump of 14.5 inches or higher, 14 continuous military-style push-ups, a 30-second plank, and completing a 1.5-mile run in 16 minutes and 11 seconds or less. Academy start dates are scheduled throughout 2025, providing multiple opportunities for candidates to begin their training.
