About The Position

MCSO will facilitate booking, identification, release, classification and monitoring of occupants at Milwaukee County Jail, a maximum-security facility. They will perform this process properly, maintain a safe and secure facility. Assist law enforcement, courts, attorneys & prisons. This job exists to ensure occupant rights from the time of booking until release and to ensure safety and security of the occupants, the staff and the community.

Requirements

  • Current resident of the United States
  • Must be at least 19 years of age.
  • High School Diploma/GED or equivalent required
  • Certification by the Law Enforcement Standards Board must be acquired during the probationary period and maintained during incumbency.
  • Successful passing of fingerprinting and background investigation. Felons, unless pardoned, will be rejected.
  • Successfully passing all exams
  • Skill in reading and comprehending written material; oral and written communications skills; ability to gain the respect and control the behavior of offenders; ability to take prompt and decisive action in emergency situations; ability to restrain combative occupants; ability to maintain a positive attitude and emotional control; ability to work with computers; ability to follow work procedures and rules; ability to work effectively and harmoniously with others. Ability to work all shifts, holidays, and weekends; ability to work mandatory overtime. Must be able to lift and carry up to 50lbs and push and pull up to 100lbs.
  • Ability to perform physical tasks (such as restrain combative occupants who weigh 250lbs or more; apply/remove mechanic/soft restraints, e.g., handcuffs, R.I.P.P. bed, assist physically or mentally ill or incapacitated occupants; endure exposure to extreme indoor or outdoor temperatures, e.g., when supervising activity, transporting occupants, or guarding facility parameters, may be exposure to OC or pepper spray.

Nice To Haves

  • College level course work in law enforcement, criminal justice, psychology, sociology, education, or social work preferred.
  • Valid WI Driver’s License and must be maintained throughout employment preferred
  • Carry Concealed Weapon permit required for weapon trained officers.
  • K-9 Certification for K-9 officers.

Responsibilities

  • Process occupants through booking, identification, classifying, housing and release. Review arrest information, determine the validity of the arrest documents. Assist intake court in processing the case files and occupant court appearances. Collect DNA samples when required.
  • Monitor, supervise, ensure safety and security of occupants while using professional communication skills and specialized training. Ensure the facility security is not breached. Assist in special assignments. Keep occupants and community safe.
  • Provide secure movement throughout the facility to include intake/preliminary court, criminal proceedings & trials, medical appointments, education needs, professional/nonprofessional visits. Weapons COs escort occupants off premises and convey money to the treasurer.
  • Full knowledge of MCSO and WI DOC policies/rules regarding the proper housing and treatment of occupants to include the discipline, rights and privileges of occupants and special procedures responsibilities for special posts.
  • Specialized training is required to ensure the safety and needs of all occupants who have various ranges of mental health/medical needs. Monitor their behavior and conditions closely.
  • Respond to alarms & incidents within the facility. Assist to gain control of uncooperative/combative occupants to gain compliance. Respond to all fire and duress alarms in all the Courthouse Complex buildings between the hours of 5pm and 7am.
  • As trained first responder provide emergency medical care to the level of training. Use verbal skills and trained techniques to respond to suicidal occupants and to calm and control combative and mentally ill occupants.
  • Using handheld radios as a primary source, communicate to a centralized dispatch center within the jail to coordinate communication and assignments. Phones or other devices may also be used as directed. Proper communication protocol and usage is essential.
  • To perform any other duties as assigned.
