About The Position

The San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office is seeking highly motivated individuals for several Correctional Officer opportunities. This recruitment aims to fill current vacancies and establish an eligible list for future openings. The Correctional Officer-Lateral position is a journey level role responsible for following established procedures in receiving prisoners, maintaining discipline, and preventing escapes. Candidates who have completed specific California Training Programs may be considered for this position, including the Adult Corrections Core Course, Probation Officer Core Course, Juvenile Corrections Officer Core Course, CDCR Basic Academy Course, or POST Basic Academy Course. Potential new hires must pass a pre-employment physical examination, drug screen, and background investigation as a condition of employment. The County covers the cost of the initial drug screen and physical examination.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or satisfactory completion of a G.E.D. test (scores must meet level established by Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission).
  • Possession of a valid California Driver's License.
  • Be at least 18 years of age upon appointment.
  • Meet minimum standards required for Peace Officers as set forth in Section 1029 and 1031 of the Government Code and Section 831 (c) of the California Penal Code.
  • Pass background investigation conducted by Sheriff's Office.
  • Meet physical standards established for safety members.
  • Successfully complete a basic training course approved by California's Board of State and Community Corrections within the first 12 months of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Receive prisoners from law enforcement officers for detention in County jail and honor farm; obtain information from prisoners; receive and record prisoners' personal property; conduct searches, photographs, and fingerprints of prisoners and assign them to cells.
  • Supervise work and personal activities of inmates including eating, bathing, recreation, and other daily activities; supervise prisoner counseling, work rehabilitation, and therapy programs; transport low security inmates.
  • Release prisoners from jail on proper authorization; return prisoner's clothing and other personal property.
  • Collect and dispense prisoner clothing; maintain clothing, linen, and cleaning supplies inventories.
  • Examine packages, letters, and other articles coming into the jail for the prisoners; ensure that all items conform to established policy; remove contraband.
  • Provide first responder care and treatment during medical incidents; arrange for advanced medical treatment.
  • Maintain records and reports of prisoner activities and conduct; utilize data terminals for reporting, keeping records, and obtaining information.
  • May lead other workers as assigned and provide security for personnel providing services.
  • May be assigned duties related to Training Officer, Classification Officer, Transportation Coordinator, K9, and Correctional Emergency Response Team.
