About The Position

The Correctional Officer at Oglala Sioux Tribe is responsible for maintaining the safety and security of the facility and its inmates. Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent GED.
  • Must be at least twenty (20) years of age.
  • No misdemeanor or convictions in the past one (1) year, excluding minor traffic violations.
  • Must have never been convicted of a felony.
  • Valid driver's license is required.
  • Ability to manage people and maintain a high moral standard.
  • Knowledge of English language structure, spelling, grammar, and composition rules.
  • Integrity and ethical behavior are essential for this position.
  • Proficiency in computer programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PDF, and email.
  • Ability to learn and utilize jail management software.
  • Pass a physical examination and background investigation check.
  • Complete the Basic Correctional Officers Training Program within one year of employment.

  • Bi-lingual in Lakota Language preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Book delinquent youths using the Central Square Computer System.
  • Conduct pat and cell searches, cell checks, and suicide watches.
  • Serve meals and dispense medication to inmates.
  • Complete various paperwork including logs, reports, and forms related to detention duties.
  • Ensure daily laundry and facility cleaning duties are completed and monitored.
  • Communicate professionally with the public, parents, guardians, and court personnel.
  • Transport detained youth to medical appointments and stay with them until relieved.
  • Cover shifts and areas in case of emergencies or extreme weather conditions.
  • Adhere to tribal penal code, facility policies, and training requirements.
  • Participate in mandatory drug/alcohol testing.
