About The Position

The Correctional Officer Captain position at Apalachee Correctional Institution in Sneads, Florida, is a critical role within the Florida Department of Corrections. This position is an internal promotional opportunity, exclusively available to current employees of the Florida Department of Corrections. The incumbent will be responsible for supervising Correctional Officers and Correctional Officer Sergeants across various security posts during established shifts. The role requires a strong leader who can effectively manage personnel, ensure security protocols are followed, and maintain a safe environment for both staff and inmates. As the initial Commander during emergency situations, the Correctional Officer Captain must be prepared to act decisively and coordinate responses to incidents. This includes planning, organizing, and coordinating the activities of all assigned staff, delegating post assignments, and ensuring accurate completion of attendance and leave reports. The Captain will work closely with lead officers to ensure proper security coverage and will conduct periodic counseling sessions with staff to address performance issues and provide additional training or instructions as needed. The responsibilities extend to conducting searches for contraband, performing daily inspections of the facility, and ensuring compliance with sanitation standards. The Captain will also function as the facility manager during non-administrative hours, circulating throughout the institution to observe employee performance and conducting performance evaluations. Training programs for subordinates will be scheduled and coordinated, and the Captain will be responsible for continuous training in security procedures. In addition to supervisory duties, the Correctional Officer Captain will manage inmate housing areas, enforce rules, and maintain sanitation standards. The role involves transporting inmates, conducting accurate head counts, and maintaining custody and control during appointments outside the secured perimeter. The Captain will also be involved in crisis intervention, using approved methods to subdue violent or uncooperative inmates and ensuring facility security through contraband searches and surveillance. This position requires strong observational skills and the ability to respond effectively to emergencies, including providing CPR and first aid when necessary.
