This Correctional Officer Captain position is located at Northwest Florida Reception Center. The incumbent in this position is considered to have regulatory responsibilities and is subject to the provisions of Chapter 60L-36, Florida Administrative Code. The Officer assigned to this position has the responsibility of supervising Correctional Officers and Correctional Officer Sergeants assigned to any security post on any of the established shifts. This position serves as the initial Commander during emergency situations. Also plans, organizes and coordinates the activities of all Correctional Officers and Correctional Officer Sergeants assigned to a shift.

  • Delegates post assignments, specific duty assignments, coordinates leave use and ensures accurate completion of attendance and leave reports.
  • Works with lead officers to ensure proper security coverage.
  • Conducts periodic individual counseling with staff to outline problem areas and give additional duties or instructions.
  • Supervises searches for contraband and makes daily inspections of buildings and grounds.
  • Inspects physical plant for security concerns and to maintain proper sanitation standards.
  • Functions as facility manager during non-administrative hours.
  • Circulates throughout institution observing employees’ performance.
  • Conducts performance evaluations.
  • Schedules and/or coordinates training programs for subordinates.
  • Conducts continuous training of subordinate staff in security procedures and performance.
  • Takes and recommends non-appealable disciplinary action and recommends appealable disciplinary action to higher level management.
  • Supervises and coordinates body cavity searches as authorized by the Warden.
  • Authorizes non-emergency applications of use of force.
  • Supervises inmates commensurate with the level of risk they present.
  • Manages inmate housing areas, enforces rules and sanitation standards.
  • Transports inmates using approved restraints and observing relevant laws, policies and procedures.
  • Conducts accurate head counts, maintains custody and control over inmates at appointments outside the secured perimeter and escorts inmates within the secured perimeter.
  • Inventories personal property and issues receipts.
  • Performs crisis intervention functions to include but not limited to subduing violent or uncooperative inmates, defending persons against attack, or preventing escapes, using approved deadly or non-deadly force, restraints or other approved methods.
  • Maintains facility security, including performing contraband searches of either male or female inmates and other persons.
  • Observes inmate behavior to identify inmates exhibiting mental or emotional disorders, using counseling techniques or referral action as outlined in written policies or guidelines.
  • Provides emergency assistance during emergencies, disasters and accidents.
  • Conducts inspections and visual and audio surveillance of persons, property, vehicles, building and outdoor areas.
  • Physically checks doors, windows, gates, barred sections, fences and other areas to ensure proper security.
  • Maintains proper inventory records.
  • Issues and receives property and equipment.
  • Attends mandatory and other training.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Be a citizen of the United States.
  • Must have a High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have completed the basic recruit training course for correctional officers and have one year of experience as a certified officer with the State of Florida.
  • Must not have received a suspension within the past 12 months.
  • Must not have received an involuntary demotion within the past 24 months.
  • Must not have received less than a 3.00 rating on a performance evaluation within the past 3 fiscal years.
