About The Position
The Correctional Officer 1 position at the State of Tennessee involves working under general supervision to perform correctional work of average difficulty. This role is critical in maintaining the safety and security of a state penal institution, specifically at the Morgan County Correctional Complex. The officer will be responsible for the custody, transport, and rehabilitation of inmates, ensuring that their needs are met while also upholding institutional policies and procedures. The position requires flexibility, as employees may be assigned to various shifts and posts throughout their careers, with no guarantee of remaining in a specific assignment. As a newly hired Correctional Officer, individuals will be eligible for a $5,000 sign-on bonus, which will be distributed over an 18-month period. The starting salary for this position is $3,710 monthly, equating to $44,520 annually. Candidates must meet specific qualifications, including passing a pre-employment drug screening, undergoing a criminal history check, and completing a physical and psychological evaluation. Successful candidates will also need to complete a prescribed course of instruction at the Tennessee Correction Academy upon appointment. The role is classified as an entry-level position within the Correctional Officer sub-series, and it is essential for candidates to possess a good moral character, as determined by an investigation. The responsibilities of the position include supervising inmate activities, inspecting for contraband, observing inmate behavior, and preparing various reports. Officers will also be required to operate equipment such as two-way radios and firearms, ensuring the safety of residents and intervening in potentially dangerous situations as necessary.
