About The Position

The Correctional Lieutenant at Montana State Prison is responsible for overseeing the safety and security of the facility, staff, and inmates. This role includes administrative duties, field training, and direct supervision of correctional officers. The lieutenant will manage scheduling, performance evaluations, and ensure compliance with institutional policies. The position also involves acting as a Duty Officer and performing administrative functions in the absence of higher-ranking officials.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in criminal justice or equivalent experience (two years of experience for one year of education).
  • Four years in a uniformed security position (correctional officer, sergeant, law enforcement, etc.).
  • Two years of supervisory experience required.
  • Basic POST Certification is required; Intermediate POST must be obtained within one year.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen, at least 18 years old, and possess a valid Montana driver's license.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in law enforcement or corrections is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform administrative, field training, and security duties to ensure safety and security.
  • Supervise correctional staff and complete personnel functions within the Security unit.
  • Compose and manage scheduling for correctional staff and assist in scheduling for Correctional Sergeants.
  • Directly supervise all single man posts and assist in the supervision of correctional officers.
  • Create, develop, and maintain Post Orders for single man posts throughout the institution.
  • Ensure staff are familiar with and understand their Post Orders.
  • Approve time sheets and leave requests for staff.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and appraisal interviews for subordinates.
  • Model appropriate behavior and counsel staff as needed, using progressive discipline when necessary.
  • Conduct administrative investigations and participate in recruitment, selections, and promotions.
  • Serve as a Duty Officer on a rotating basis and perform administrative duties in the absence of higher officials.
