About The Position

Under direction of the Captain, the Correctional Lieutenant (CL) supervises the work of Correctional Sergeants, Officers, and non-sworn staff in the safe custody, discipline and welfare of incarcerated people. The CL must be able to work in conditions that require all the following essential functions: Provide overall custodial supervision of assigned area of responsibility, subordinate staff, and incarcerated people. Closely monitor the work performance of subordinate personnel, assuring constant and consistent maintenance of safety and security throughout the institution. Evaluate subordinate staff through preparation and discussion of performance reports. Train subordinate staff through presentation of IST and OJT classes and individual training with subordinates as need arises. Conduct unit tours on a regular basis. Complete weekly/monthly forms. Monitor attendance of subordinates. Maintain and update Federal Labor and Standard Acts (FLSA), post orders, and other documents, as necessary. This is accomplished via regular audits to verify and identify necessary corrective action. Ensure all required modifications are completed prior to finalizing said documents. Review all reports, California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) 115s, CDCR 128s, supplemental incident reports, etc. issued by subordinate staff for accuracy and completeness, making corrections as necessary. Maintain order and discipline within the incarcerated population by ensuring compliance with departmental and institutional procedures and policies. Attend Watch and Warden/Second Line supervisors' meetings. Act as hearing officer on serious CDCR 115s by conducting interviews with the reporting employee, staff, and/or incarcerated witnesses, determining a finding to adjudicate the disposition, and taking appropriate action (dismissal, reclassifying to CDCR 128, etc.). Assist in the processing of appeals at the Second Level review by interviewing incarcerated people and staff and preparing responses.
