About The Position

The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters! This position is located at Roanoke River Correctional Institution in Halifax County, NC. The position will serve as Officer-in-Charge in the absence of the Correctional Captain and responsibilities may include management of multiple locations usually a medium/minimum custody facility which is managed within the scope of the larger facility. These facilities house and provides services for 1,000 inmates or more. This position provides supervision of subordinate staff and is responsible for conducting shift line-ups, making shift assignments, and inspecting all personnel to determine if they are physically and mentally capable of assuming an assigned post. Conducts inspections of housing units and other buildings, grounds, and posts to ascertain that officers are alert, that discipline is being maintained, and that assignments are carried out properly. This position will complete, review, and maintain time reports, duty rosters, leave schedules, performance evaluations, and administrative forms. This position will account for persons and funds and ensure that all assigned equipment is operationally ready and identify training needs and coordinate delivery of training for subordinate staff. This position will conduct internal investigations, develop operational plans, post orders, and Standard Operating Procedures.

Requirements

  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of experience as a Correctional Sergeant; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
