About The Position

The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters! This is a medium custody male facility. This position will report to the Correctional Program Supervisor.

Requirements

  • Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
  • Associate’s degree in Criminal Justice, Human Services, Recreation or a related field from an appropriately accredited institution; or High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of custody experience within the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Documented knowledge of case management practices, or supportive counseling techniques and/or interviewing techniques for intake assessments

Responsibilities

  • Assessing offender behavior and developing counseling strategies to achieve desired offender progress.
  • Answering offender questions, giving information about classification and sentencing status, corresponding with offender families, and providing supportive counseling.
  • Organizing and directing the activities of various rehabilitation programs provided for offender.
  • Coordinating community resources, planning and coordinating transition (re-entry) prior to parole or release into the community.
  • Making recommendations to the offender classification committees on an inmate’s program involvement or custody level change.
  • Working with inmates whose problems, needs and comprehension levels vary greatly.
  • Working in all sections of a Medium Custody prison facility which places them in constant contact with offenders.
  • Serving in a custody role during certain activities.
  • Working some evening hours, weekends, and holidays.
