Reporting to the Associate Warden for Custody, this position is the Officer-in-charge (OIC) and is responsible for the custody and security of the facility and the safety of the general public. This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits. Southern Correctional Institution is located in Troy, North Carolina and houses up to 700 male offenders in a close, medium, and minimum custody facility.

  • Planning, supervising, and coordinating activities in a close custody facility.
  • Following security policies and procedures, assigning and supervising custody staff, and coordinating administrative affairs within the facility.
  • Serving as shift supervisor, supervisor of Correctional Lieutenant III's, and may serve as Officer-in-Charge.
  • Conducting frequent inspections of housing units and other buildings, grounds, and posts to ascertain that officers are alert, that discipline is maintained, and that assignments are being carried out effectively.
  • Implementing disciplinary measures with offenders and employees on minor infractions of rules and investigating offender complaints and making reports of such actions to higher level officials.
  • Working to prevent or resolve disorders such as: assaults, riots, fires, and escapes.
  • Preparing reports on offenders pertaining to their behavior, attitudes, and work records for use on the offender classification committee.
  • Organizing and conducting training programs for employees, including on-the-job training.
  • Documented supervisory skills in a prison facility.
  • Knowledge of facility operations.
  • Knowledge of Prisons' policy and procedures.
  • Documented report writing skills.
  • High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and three years of experience as a Correctional Lieutenant, or two years of experience as a Correctional Lieutenant III, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • MUST be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission.
