About The Position

The Correctional Behavioral Specialist I position is located at the Central Prison Healthcare Complex in Raleigh, NC, and is responsible for administering psychological tests to inmates, providing counseling, and gathering relevant background information to aid in mental health assessments. This role involves working closely with inmates to facilitate their adjustment to the prison environment and functioning as a liaison with diagnostic and treatment staff.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in psychology or a related human services field with coursework in psychology, or equivalent education and experience.
• At least one year of experience administering and/or conducting psychological testing.
• Working knowledge of psychological principles and psychometric theory.
• Understanding of the causes of criminal behavior and the stresses faced by inmates during incarceration.
• Knowledge of crisis intervention and supportive counseling techniques.
• Familiarity with psychiatric diagnostic categories and associated behaviors.
• Effective communication skills in both oral and written forms.
• Ability to organize and prepare accurate records, charts, and reports.

Responsibilities

• Administer, score, and supervise psychological tests to inmates in a diagnostic/mental health setting.
• Counsel inmates to establish rapport and facilitate valid test results.
• Gather relevant social, criminal, and mental health background information for test interpretation and report preparation.
• Manage an assigned supportive counseling caseload to aid inmates' adjustment to the prison environment.
• Function as a liaison with diagnostic and treatment staff and participate in various treatment-related committees.
