About The Position

The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. Employees in this class handle the initial interviewing and processing of those persons entering the prison system. Employees are located at a Diagnostic Center in the prison facility where the inmates are processed. Work primarily involves gathering socioeconomic information, education, substance abuse history, explaining terms of the sentence, and providing general orientation to prison processes and procedures. Work also includes recording data, and maintaining all inmate records. This position is responsible for the initial interviewing and processing of offenders sentenced to prison.

Requirements

  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and one year of correctional or human services experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Handle the initial interviewing and processing of those persons entering the prison system.
  • Gather socioeconomic information, education, substance abuse history.
  • Explain terms of the sentence.
  • Provide general orientation to prison processes and procedures.
  • Record data and maintain all offender records.
  • Conduct offender orientation classes on a regular basis.
  • Obtain various types of information (socioeconomic, education substance abuse history, etc.) from offenders once they have been admitted to include interviewing offenders, explaining terms of their sentence and entering information into the OPUS system from the commitment and a variety of personal background documents and interviews.
  • Make recommendations to a supervisor from the information gathered during the admission process as needed.
  • Communicate clearly with offenders who may be difficult to communicate with and who may not understand why information is being asked and/or may have difficulty providing responses while utilizing various approaches with different offenders in order to ensure successful collection of necessary data.
  • Explain policies, practices, and procedures, as well as answering basic questions a new offender may have regarding what to expect during his commitment.
  • Create and maintain a variety of files in both electronic and in hard copy format, including, but not limited to, offender records, reports, memorandum, policies, orientation materials and statistics, and general correspondences.
