About The Position

This Corporate Security Investigator is a full-time Virginia Natural Gas employee responsible for delivering a comprehensive blend of physical security operations / project management, internal and external investigations, coordination of electronic security systems support, and armed executive protection. This position reports to and supports Southern Company Gas Corporate Security by conducting sensitive investigations, managing and maintaining physical security defense in depth frameworks, performing risk assessments, coordinating local, state, and federal physical / electronic security compliance, supporting emergency operations, and ensuring the protection of company personnel, facilities, critical infrastructure, reputation, and other interests. Operating in plain clothes, the Corporate Security Investigator provides armed protective services, conducts threat assessments, supports special events, and responds to emergencies across the Virginia Natural Gas footprint. The role requires strong project management aptitude, investigative expertise, and the ability to collaborate with internal stakeholders, law enforcement, regulators, and external partners to uphold Southern Company Gas Corporate Security standards, policies, and operations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, emergency management, business management, computer science, or related field or equivalent professional experience preferred.
  • 7 years law enforcement, corporate security, protective services, military service required
  • 3 years criminal investigations, internal affairs, corporate investigations, internal auditing, etc. preferred.
  • Experience with physical / electronic security, risk assessment, federal security compliance preferred.
  • Experience conducting interviews, crime scene inspection, surveillance, and evidence handling required.
  • Experience with IP based CCTV, access control systems, and physical security technologies (Software House CCure, Avigilon Control Center) helpful.
  • Experience supporting or conducting executive protection operations preferred.
  • Must successfully complete background investigation, psychological testing, functional capacity exam, and firearms qualifications.
  • Must obtain and maintain all required state firearms permits and licensing.
  • Must possess and maintain valid state driver’s license.
  • Working knowledge of electronic security hardware/software, access control systems, video management systems, and intrusion detection systems helpful.
  • Ability to manage quality control for security integrators hired for installation and maintenance of physical / electronic security systems.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to prepare clear, concise investigative reports and present findings to leadership.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to build strong relationships with internal customers, local, state, and federal law enforcement, vendors, state and federal regulators, and cross functional teams.
  • High ethical standards and discretion in handling sensitive or confidential information.
  • Strong conflict resolution, negotiation, and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks, and prioritize effectively.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and prioritize tasks in a highly dynamic environment in which priorities can shift with little notice.

  • Frequent travel (up to 50%+), including overnight stays.
  • Must be available for afterhours call outs, storm response, and emergency deployments.
  • Ability to lift 25+ pounds and perform physically demanding tasks (standing, walking, bending, kneeling, crawling).
  • Ability to work in varying outdoor weather conditions and environments.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct proactive and reactive investigations involving violations of law, company policy, fraud, theft, workplace violence, and other security incidents.
  • Collect, analyze, and preserve evidence; conduct interviews; prepare detailed investigative reports.
  • Obtain warrants and support prosecution when appropriate; testify in legal proceedings.
  • Maintain liaison with federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies.
  • Conduct threat assessments and support protective intelligence functions.
  • Provide armed executive protection for company executives and high-risk personnel.
  • Conduct advance work, route planning, venue assessments, and threat analysis.
  • Maintain readiness to respond to emergent threats or security incidents involving protected individuals.
  • Support special events, high visibility meetings, and sensitive corporate activities.
  • Support the design, installation, maintenance, and administration of access control, video surveillance, and alarm systems.
  • Monitor system performance, troubleshoot issues, and coordinate repairs with vendors.
  • Identify opportunities to improve system performance and recommend upgrades.
  • Ensure all systems are protected from unauthorized access and meet regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct physical security surveys, vulnerability assessments, and risk mitigation planning for company facilities.
  • Develop and update post orders, emergency response plans, and security procedures for contract guard services and/or off-duty law enforcement, including provision of timely feedback and quality control.
  • Support preparedness drills, exercises, and emergency response operations.
  • Assist with security overwatch for HR related events (terminations, conflict mitigation).
  • Manage physical security projects from planning through implementation, ensuring on time and cost-effective completion.
  • Coordinate with Facilities, IT, Legal, HR, Engineering, System Operations, Emergency Management and other business units to ensure cohesive security strategies.
  • Review and process vendor invoices; manage physical / electronic security projects and budgets.
  • Deliver training to employees on physical security systems, active shooter, emergency procedures, and security awareness.
  • Effectively maintain professional liaison with local, state, and federal law enforcement, and peer corporate security teams.
