About The Position

Reporting to the Chief People Officer, the Corporate Risk & Safety Manager is responsible for the execution and governance of the company’s enterprise risk management and safety programs across student transportation operations. This role focuses on the administration of insurance programs, oversight of claims activity, implementation of safety initiatives, regulatory compliance support, and performance reporting. This position plays a key role in maintaining effective safety standards, managing risk exposure, leading insurance renewal preparation and process, driving improvement in safety metrics, and ensuring consistent safety practices across terminals and operating locations. The ideal candidate brings strong operational experience within a fleet-based or multi-location regulated environment and has experience working in a mid-sized, investor-backed company undergoing and scaling for growth. This role requires a high-performing, low-ego dynamic leader with a strong background in risk management and safety, regulatory compliance and safety culture development.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required (Risk Management, Safety, Business, Finance, Transportation, or related fields)
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible experience in risk management and/or safety leadership preferably within a fleet-based, regulated, or distributed operations environment.
  • Demonstrated experience managing insurance programs, including policy administration, and renewal support.
  • Experience overseeing claims administration, including coordination with TPAs and carriers.
  • Experience building a strong safety culture through employee engagement, implementing corporate safety programs and managing regulatory compliance requirements.
  • Strong experience with safety analytics, KPI tracking, and reporting.
  • Experience in a multi-site, private equity or investor backed business that has undergone rapid growth and operational scaling.

Responsibilities

  • Risk Management & Insurance Administration
  • Administration of corporate insurance programs, including auto liability, general liability, workers’ compensation, umbrella/excess, environmental, and property coverage.
  • Partner with brokers and carriers during renewal cycles by compiling exposure data, loss runs, underwriting materials, and supporting documentation.
  • Monitor certificates of insurance and compliance requirements.
  • Claims Management & Oversight
  • Oversee day-to-day coordination of claims with third-party administrators (TPAs), carriers, and defense counsel.
  • Monitor claims reporting timeliness and other relevant claims management KPIs.
  • Track claim trends, severity, and reserves; escalate significant claims to senior leadership and reduce risk exposure utilizing predictive analytics.
  • Ensure effective litigation management and settlement coordination with carriers and claimants.
  • Safety Program Implementation
  • Support operational development and implementation of consistent, scalable corporate safety policies, procedures, and training programs across student transportation operations.
  • Support and advise on safety standards for employee / driver qualification and onboarding and ongoing compliance.
  • Assist in accident investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective action tracking.
  • Support operational teams to ensure compliance with applicable DOT/FMCSA (as applicable), OSHA, state pupil transportation, and local regulatory requirements.
  • Safety Metrics & Reporting
  • Maintain safety dashboards and track key performance indicators (KPIs), including incident frequency, preventable rate, workers’ compensation trends, and telematics indicators.
  • Prepare regular reports for senior leadership on claims activity and safety performance.
  • Analyze incident and claims data to identify trends and recommend practical corrective actions.
  • Support implementation and monitoring of telematics and safety technology systems.
  • Safety Culture & Engagement
  • Promote consistent safety expectations across the company at all levels
  • Support safety meetings, communication campaigns, and recognition programs.
  • Partner with operations to reinforce accountability for safe operating practices & regulatory compliance.
  • Growth & Operational Support
  • Support onboarding new locations/acquisitions by integrating them into safety and risk processes.
  • Develop and maintain standardized documentation, training materials, and reporting tools across operating companies.
  • Provide field support to operating company leaders and team-members as needed.
  • Provide mentoring and education for leaders on safety and risk management best practices.
