About The Position

Counsel will provide legal advice and practical solutions to support the company and related entities, including commercial transactions, regulatory compliance related to alcohol beverage operations, and litigation management. This role will provide strategic legal advice to support sales, supply chain, marketing, and coworkers-and-culture teams, while proactively identifying risks in a heavily regulated environment. Title and compensation commensurate with experience. Ideal candidate will reside within striking distance of one of our major breweries, Fort Collins, CO, Asheville, NC, Daleville, VA, or Kalamazoo, MI.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctorate (J.D.) degree from an ABA accredited law school.
  • Active bar membership in Colorado, Michigan, North Carolina, or Virginia, or bar membership in another state with ability to gain accreditation in one of these jurisdictions.
  • Five or more years’ experience in US law practice.
  • Excellent legal drafting, negotiation, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize effectively.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience at a national law firm and/or in a regulated consumer products company preferred.
  • Experience in complex commercial contracting is highly preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage litigation and outside counsel is highly preferred.
  • Experience with alcohol beverage law is a plus.
  • Experience with employment law and internal investigations is a plus.
  • Expertise in additional practice areas such as advertising law, compliance, or product counseling is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Identify legal risks and potential liabilities for the company's business activities and manage those risks effectively.
  • Collaborate with and support other in-house attorneys and regulatory compliance staff.
  • Draft, negotiate, and advise on complex commercial agreements, including related to distribution, procurement, co‑manufacturing contracts, sponsorships, and capital projects.
  • Oversee or coordinate legal disputes, including managing external legal counsel participating in litigation strategy.
  • Develop, review, revise, and implement company policy and/or procedures to mitigate risk and streamline processes, taking into consideration company values and culture.
  • Regularly provide and effectively communicate expert legal advice to all levels of company employees, from executives to individual contributors, adapting style, messaging, and delivery to recipient knowledge level and preferences.
  • Become a trusted advisor to company employees through knowledge of the business and provision of practical legal advice.
  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive and critical legal and business matters.
  • Identify and understand all facets of significant, complex business issues and the impact of possible solutions.
  • Monitor changes in laws and regulations relevant to the company's industry and operations, and advise on the company's compliance with applicable legal requirements.
  • Provide miscellaneous day-to-day legal support and advice for the company.
  • Regularly communicate with CLO on legal and risk analyses, company priorities, and department projects.
