About The Position

Caterpillar Inc. is seeking an experienced attorney to serve as IP Counsel for its global businesses, particularly within the Construction Industries and E&T group. This role is pivotal in providing leadership and legal expertise on significant intellectual property (IP) issues, including patents, agreements, and risk management. The successful candidate will conduct thorough analyses and provide counsel to business leaders at all levels, ensuring that legal risks are assessed and managed effectively. The position requires collaboration with CAT business unit leadership, staff, and other members of the Intellectual Property team to deliver high-quality legal support globally. The IP Counsel will be responsible for a broad range of intellectual property matters, particularly for the Construction Industries, Resource Industries, and E&T business units, and will engage in project management and leadership on significant legal IP issues. This role is based in Peoria, Illinois, and reports to the Assistant General Counsel responsible for the relevant IP team. In this position, the attorney will be accountable for identifying and resolving technical legal issues with a wide range of IP risk exposure. The role demands a proactive approach to legal counsel, requiring the attorney to work closely with senior business leaders, including Caterpillar Vice Presidents, to ensure that the company's IP strategies align with its business objectives. The ideal candidate will possess a law degree, considerable experience in U.S. law, particularly patent law, and active bar admissions in any U.S. state and the USPTO. Subject matter expertise in electro-mechanical technology, engine and power system development, and predictive and diagnostic analytics is also essential. The attorney will be expected to demonstrate strong risk management skills, effective communication abilities, and the capacity to manage multiple priorities while solving complex problems.
