About The Position

The Controller is responsible for the company’s accounting practices, the maintenance of its fiscal records, and the preparation of financial reports. This role provides the strategic bridge between raw project data and executive decision-making. The Controller ensures that the Assistant Controller’s team produces accurate data while focusing on treasury management, project cost and controls management, and long-term financial health.

Requirements

Mastery of construction-specific accounting (Revenue Recognition, Percentage of Completion method, and Job Costing).
Ability to distill complex financial data into actionable insights for the CFO and Leadership.
Proven track record of managing high-performing finance teams and developing successors (such as the Assistant Controller).
Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle highly sensitive information with integrity and professionalism.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with field employees, supervisors, and executive leadership.
Collaborative leadership style with the ability to work effectively across departments and job-site teams.
Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite programs and ERP Systems such as CMiC.
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA or CMA strongly preferred; CCIFP preferred.
10+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 5 years in a leadership role (Controller or Accounting Manager) specifically within the Construction or Real Estate Development industries.
Experience managing the financials for a company with $400M–$600M+ in annual revenue is highly desirable.
Ability to work in both construction site environments and office settings.
Prolonged periods of standing, walking, sitting at a desk, and working on a computer.
Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including steel-toe shoes, safety glasses, hard hat, gloves, hearing protection, and safety vest when visiting jobsites.
Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds occasionally.

CPA or CMA strongly preferred
CCIFP preferred.

Responsibilities

Oversee the Work-in-Progress (WIP) reporting process, ensuring over/under billings are accurately captured and project margins are protected.
Direct the preparation of the consolidated monthly financial package for the CFO and Board, providing high-level commentary on $500M+ in annual volume.
Lead the annual corporate budgeting process and coordinate with the Operating Departments to ensure departmental and project-level forecasts align with company goals.
Design and enforce a robust internal control framework to safeguard assets and prevent fraud across multiple job sites and entities.
Serve as the primary point of contact for external auditors, ensuring a seamless year-end audit and tax preparation process.
Assist the CFO in managing relationships with bonding companies and banks, providing the necessary reporting to maintain high bonding capacity.
Provide direct supervision to the Assistant Controller, Payroll Manager, and Project Accountants.
Act as a final escalation point for complex accounting issues or personnel matters within the finance department.
Monitor total company liquidity and treasury functions, ensuring cash flow is optimized for large-scale equipment purchases and project startups.
Identify and champion the implementation of new ERP modules or accounting technologies to scale the department alongside company growth.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
