About The Position

Reporting to the Vice-President of Finance, the Corporate Controller will be responsible for creating the General Ledger as well as all the financial processes and procedures for the Nature & Culture Museum of Wisconsin (NCMW) and will play an integral part in MPM’s transition to the next phase of its history. Once established this position will also be responsible, either personally or through subordinates, for the financial and managerial accounting, accounts receivable and payable, revenue recording, payroll processing, grant accounting, and compliance with the law and general accepted principles and procedures for the NCMW. You will be successful in this role if you: Are willing to commit to the mission and values of a non-profit organization. Are excited at the prospect of being able to build an organization’s financial procedures and General Ledger from the ground up. Have the ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts and operations. Have the ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Have good written and verbal communication skills with the ability to write reports and present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, employees, and outside agencies. Have the ability to make independent evaluations and decisions based on experience, knowledge, and training. Are flexible and able to transition from a non-supervisory role to supervising a small team once the transition to the NCMW is complete. Can set priorities and meet deadlines with no supervision and are able to motivate others to do the same. Are proficient in database, spreadsheet, and word processing applications and are able to design and utilize computer accounting software.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree (B.A. or B.S.) in accounting from a four-year college or university.
  • Five years of accounting experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Certified Public Accountant (C.P.A.) designation, preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Preparing reports of financial data including but not limited to financial statements and analysis of General Ledger accounts.
  • Working with external auditors to facilitate audits and compliance.
  • Reviewing all financial tax returns to ensure accuracy and correctness.
  • Reviewing the monthly reconciliation of sub-ledger to the General Ledger and ensuring that all overdue accounts are followed up on for collection.
  • Overseeing development and updating of procedures relating to the accounts receivable function.
  • Overseeing the grant accounting function including timely external filings to federal and state agencies.
  • Supervising a small team once the transition to the NCMW is complete.
  • Working with department heads and senior staff to prepare budgets in accordance with goals of the NCMW.
  • Overseeing the cash flows, analyzing needs, and recommending appropriate investment actions, policies, and procedures.
  • Supervising external accounting functions.
  • Designing accounting procedures for NCMW to ensure a seamless transition from the current museum operations.
