This role is part of Blue Origin corporate functions, providing centralized support across Blue Origin business unit teams, functions, and locations. The Controller at Blue Origin leads a high-performing accounting organization while serving as a strategic financial leader for the enterprise. This executive oversees all aspects of accounting operations including payroll, accounts payable, audit, and compliance functions while establishing robust financial controls, policies, and reporting systems that protect company assets and ensure regulatory compliance. The role demands excellence in developing team members, simplifying processes for internal customers, and managing enterprise systems including ERP and government compliance tools. The Controller provides critical financial guidance across the organization, interprets complex financial data to inform management decisions, and drives continuous improvement initiatives to transform operations. This leader plays a vital role in Blue Origin's mission by identifying opportunities for cost reduction and operational efficiency that contribute to lowering the cost of access to space, while ensuring adherence to federal, state, local, and government contracting requirements through proactive monitoring of existing and emerging legislation.

  • Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate discipline such as Finance or Accounting; CPA
  • 10+ years’ experience in Accounting in a manufacturing and/or development setting within the Aerospace and Defense sector
  • Experience with multiple legal entities and sites
  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and, project and cost accounting
  • Extensive experience in implementing an integrated systems
  • Experience in government contracting/government cost accounting environment with strong understanding of FAR and DFAR
  • Experience in managing regulatory, commercial, and government audits
  • Experience mentoring and coaching both financial and non-financial staff across the enterprise; building financial business acumen

Responsibilities

  • Lead a high performing team of leaders and individual contributors; establish clear team and individual objectives, support performance and career development, and team engagement
  • Develop self and others by demonstrating strong leadership presence, continuously seeking and providing feedback, coaching, and any provided resources for development
  • Lead all aspects accounting, payroll, accounts payable, and audit and compliance including the development and implementation of the monthly business rhythm, processes, procedures and tools, and standardization
  • Establish systems and process with focused simplification for our internal customer- the end user
  • Lead enterprise-wide initiatives to drive operational excellence
  • Provide accounting and business guidance to financial business partners and across the enterprise
  • Maximize return on financial assets by establishing financial policies, procedures, controls, and reporting systems
  • Guides financial decisions by establishing, monitoring, and enforcing policies and procedures
  • Protect assets by establishing, monitoring, and enforcing internal controls
  • Monitor and confirm financial condition by conducting audits and providing information to external auditors
  • Support all external auditing activity (i.e. IRS, DCAA, state and local regulatory)
  • Provide status of financial condition by collecting, interpreting, and reporting financial data
  • Prepares special reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information and trends
  • Complies with federal, state, and local legal requirements by studying existing and new legislation, anticipating future legislation, enforcing adherence to requirements, filing financial reports, and advising management on needed actions
  • Manage suite of enterprise tools including the ERP system
  • Provide government compliance guidance, and ensure systems are compliant with CAS requirements. Maintain the Disclosure Statement and support any audit activity
  • Facilitate change by seeking opportunities to transform or improve systems, processes, and model adaptability
  • Contribute to lowering the cost of access to space by driving direct and indirect cost reduction and efficiency
  • Convert data into information to inform management decisions
  • Lead the identification, development, implementation, and adoption of new processes and system
