About The Position

Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) has an immediate opening for a Corporate Accounting Supervisor located at Columbus General Office in Columbus, Nebraska.  Position closes May 17 at 11:59 p.m. Central Time.  This position will report to the Controller. Position SummaryThe incumbent is responsible for leading the development and implementation of accounting policies, processes, and activities for the maintenance and reporting of timely, accurate, and complete accounts, records, and financial statements for the District and its Trusts consistent with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), District standards, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) requirements, contracts and agreements, debt covenants, and/or laws and regulations. This position leads activities related to certain regulatory compliance activities and tax filings.  The incumbent leads the financial and accounting responsibilities for financial activity with the Southwest Power Pool (SPP), The Energy Authority, and any other equity investments by the District. The position ensures up-to-date documented standards and procedures are in place with effective internal controls and supports internal and external audit activities. The incumbent leads and/or assists with special projects and develops and maintains effective relationships within the District and with external parties. The incumbent is responsible for providing excellent customer service by the team and for promoting optimal performance and a safe, positive work environment for high employee engagement.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting OR bachelor’s degree in finance or a related field with an emphasis in accounting is required. An accounting degree is preferred.
  • Five (5) years of accounting, auditing or related work experience, preferably two (2) years of the five (5) years in utility accounting.
  • Effective leadership skills and the ability to manage several projects simultaneously are required.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of GAAP, accounting policies and practices, effective internal controls, and applicable tax laws and regulations is required.
  • Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills as well as effective interpersonal and presentation skills. Must have strong organizational skills and be committed to providing excellent customer service.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills are required.
  • Knowledge of and experience working with SAP and/or similar accounting systems are required.
  • Intermediate to advanced skills with Microsoft Office applications is required.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certification is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in a related field is highly desirable. Master of Business Administration (MBA) is preferred.
  • Experience in leading and managing direct reports in an empowering and team-based environment is preferred.
  • Knowledge of governmental accounting guidance issued by the Governmental Accounting Standards Board, the Uniform System of Accounts Prescribed for Public Utilities and Licensees Subject to the Provision of the Federal Power Act – more commonly referred to as FERC, differences between FERC and GAAP, and financial aspects of the electric utility industry is desired.
  • A working knowledge of utility financial operations is desired.
  • Certified Management Accountant (CMA), Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), or other related professional certification is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and implementation of accounting policies, processes, and activities for the maintenance and reporting of timely, accurate, and complete accounts, records, and financial statements for the District and its related Trusts, consistent with GAAP, District standards, FERC requirements, contracts and agreements, debt covenants, and/or laws and regulations.
  • Coordinate the schedules for the accounting close at month-ends and year-end and ensure the schedules are timely and properly communicated to and followed by all impacted individuals and business areas.
  • Lead the preparation of accurate and timely monthly financial statements and supporting financial schedules and reports for areas of responsibility. Activities include analysis and review of reconciliations, accounting transactions, presentations, monthly financial reports and financial statements, Annual Financial Report, Board presentations, other financial reports, financial sections of official statements and other debt offering statements, etc.
  • Collaborate with other leaders in the financial area to provide accounting guidance and information for the proper application of accounting policies and standards in the financial statements, budgets and forecasts.
  • Ensure financial transactions are properly recorded to meet responsibilities related to reporting consistent with GAAP, reporting for management budget controls and oversight, reporting by level of service for ratemaking, and reporting for compliance with FERC requirements.
  • Provide recommendations on the use of Regulatory Accounting for certain financial transactions when deemed to be in the best interest of District stakeholders.
  • Oversee activities related to the recording and reporting of financial information for integrated market settlements, regional transmission organization transactions and other related activities, including certain reports (i.e., market position report).  Oversee activities related to the accounting for the District’s equity investments, including The Energy Authority.
  • Accountable for other duties as assigned.
