About The Position

This position is responsible for the timely and respectful chain of custody transport and handling of deceased individuals who fall within the jurisdiction of the Lancaster County Coroner's Office. Local residency required.

Requirements

  • Ability to pass pre-employment criminal background investigation, drug screening and driver's record check
  • A current and valid Pennsylvania driver's license
  • Biohazard awareness training
  • Ability to work in a variety of conditions to include weather, extreme clutter, malodorous smells, and exposure to biological fluids
  • Ability to operate a vehicle in difficult situations
  • Knowledge of personal protective equipment and proper use
  • Ability to read and follow written instructions
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience with EMS, fire department, or funeral service is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Receive and respond to requests for transportation assistance from deputies
  • Respond to scenes in a county vehicle arriving within one hour of request
  • Assess scenes for any hazards that prevent safe removal of a deceased individual
  • Communicate with deputies for coordination with outside agencies during removals
  • Safely and respectfully maneuvers deceased individuals in a variety of conditions
  • Ensure that the deceased individual is appropriately placed in a human remains pouch with proper identification tags
  • Ensure that a transport form is completed
  • Weigh deceased individuals and place into proper refrigeration units
  • Log deceased individuals into the Forensic Center
  • Input transport information into the electronic case management system
  • Routinely clean transport vehicles and equipment
  • Ensure equipment is in good working condition and report any issues to the supervisor
  • Maintain portable equipment in ready condition i.e.. scene lighting, generators etc.
  • Maintain appropriate stock of supplies within the transport vehicles
  • Occasional weekend and holiday rotation required
  • This position is responsible for agency vehicle fleet management to include scheduling and coordinating maintenance, cleaning and record keeping for all vehicles and trailers.
  • Provides weekly washing of all vehicles and ensures that there are appropriate stock levels.
  • Provides routine maintenance on all vehicle equipment and personal protection equipment.
  • Responsible for maintenance and cleaning of the sally port, biohazard storage room, and chemical closet.
  • Inspects and maintains disaster supplies.
