About The Position

The laboratory coordinator position is responsible for overseeing, preparing, and teaching lab sections of Cornerstone Core Curriculum (CCC) non-major biology and environmental science courses, with placement in the lecture sections of those courses when needed. These courses are designed for non-science majors to complete their natural science requirement for graduation. Requirements

  • M.S. in an area of the natural sciences (e.g., Biology) or a closely related interdisciplinary field (e.g., Environmental Science, Ecology, etc.)
  • Familiarity with instructional laboratory equipment and software.

Nice To Haves

  • 1-3 years of teaching experience in the natural sciences is preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate all laboratory sections of non-majors courses offered by the Biology Department and the Environmental Science Program. Currently these include Biology 165: Exploring the Living World, and Environmental Science 106: Exploring the Earth.
  • Coordinating with the course lecturers to develop the lab syllabus and calendar for the lab sections associated with the lecture section(s).
  • Preparing all course materials for the lab sections, including the lab manual.
  • Preparing all necessary materials for weekly lab activities and/or making sure all lab equipment is in working order.
  • Assist faculty (full-time and adjuncts) assigned to teach laboratory sections.
  • Purchase all relevant lab materials and maintain the budget for these labs.
  • Recruit, or assist in the recruitment of, teaching assistants (undergraduate and/or graduate) for preparation and/or assistance during lab.
  • Lab coordinator will be the supervisor for all teaching assistants.
  • Work with department chair and/or program director in the scheduling of faculty teaching these laboratory sections.
  • This may include taking part in, or being responsible for, the screening and hiring of adjuncts.
  • Teach 12 contact hours per semester in a combination of lectures and/or laboratory sections.
