About The Position

Do you thrive in both the lab and the field? We’re looking for a hands-on, detail-oriented Corn Research Specialist to help drive the success of our corn breeding and yield trial programs. In this role, you’ll be a key member of the research operations team, coordinating yield trial activities—from planting and data collection to harvest and analysis—and leading seasonal staff to ensure smooth, efficient operations throughout the growing season. You’ll work closely with our breeding, agronomy, and research teams to turn data into insight, contribute to the development of new technologies and products, and keep our research operations running with precision and purpose. Please note, that while this position is based in Ames, Iowa, the selected candidate will be required to work on-site in Geneseo, Illinois, for an initial training period of approximately six (6) months to one (1) year. Following successful completion of training, the position will transition to its permanent location in Ames.

Requirements

  • B.S. in Agronomy or a closely related field, OR High school diploma and 5+ years of experience in corn research, testing, or evaluation.
  • Background in row crop farming and agricultural equipment operation (farm experience preferred).
  • Understanding of corn breeding, seed production, and research trial techniques.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Windows and related software; quick to learn new technology.
  • Certifications (or ability to obtain within 3 months): Class A CDL commercial driver’s license.
  • Commercial Pesticide Applicator Certification.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work in variable field conditions.
  • Mix of office, lab, and field work with up to 25% travel, including occasional overnight stays.
  • Expect extended hours and varying weather conditions during peak planting and harvest seasons.
  • Safe operation of commercial vehicles, forklifts, and research equipment is required.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and manage yield trial sites, including location selection, cooperator communication, planting, upkeep, data collection, and harvest.
  • Support nursery and experimental seed production efforts throughout the year.
  • Supervise, train, and motivate seasonal team members, fostering a positive and productive work environment.
  • Maintain and service field and lab equipment, collaborating with internal and external service teams.
  • Collect, organize, and analyze research data, ensuring accuracy and timeliness in reporting.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement by developing or refining tools, procedures, and best practices.
  • Support the planning and execution of field days, hybrid promotions, and special research projects.
  • Ensure compliance with safety, data integrity, and operational standards.
