About The Position

Under the supervision of the Director of Core Music Tutoring, the incumbent will tutor students in Core Music courses. These classes include harmony, ear training, music writing skills, arranging, traditional harmony, and counterpoint. Core Music Tutors may tutor students with learning disabilities, diverse needs, students in remedial programs, and special classes (ET1 - pitch matching class). Successful tutors are invited to continue in the role for future semesters. Requirements

  • Current student at Berklee College of Music or Boston Conservatory at Berklee.
  • Enrolled at least half-time in a degree, diploma, or certificate-seeking undergraduate or graduate program.
  • Summer is the only semester in which a student can maintain employment without being enrolled. In this case, the student must be pre-registered for the upcoming fall semester. This exception does not apply to fall or spring semesters.
  • Have a valid United States Social Security Number (SSN).
  • Remain in “valid” Visa status as applicable.
  • A minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA. Students in their first semester can work, even though they do not have an official GPA until the completion of their first semester.
  • Federal Work Study student may apply.
  • In good disciplinary standing.
  • Must be located in the U.S.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Strong interest in teaching and pedagogy, including learning styles, learning disabilities, and other disability needs.
  • Awareness of and sensitivity to the needs of a diverse student population with particular attention to academic skills and diverse backgrounds.
  • Organizational and collaborative skills.
  • In-depth knowledge of core music curriculum classes taught at Berklee College.
  • Basic familiarity with Google Suite tools.

Nice To Haves

  • Upper- semester students are preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Tutor between 5-18 hours of weekly and/or drop-in sessions.
  • Attend 2 hours of weekly training on curriculum support, pedagogy, public service issues, learning disabilities, and other disability needs topics.
  • Collaborate with students, faculty, and staff.
  • Meet regularly with the staff and faculty members who are involved in the tutoring program.
