The Coordinator will be responsible for assisting with the following research projects: • Studies investigating the impact of biological sex on cardiac responses to gamma radiation (as might be encountered during a nuclear disaster or therapeutic irradiation for a thoracic tumor. The RA will manage and monitor cohorts of male and female mice for these studies, assist with measurement of cardiac function by echocardiography, and perform experiments using high-resolution respirometry, protein immunoblotting, qRT-PCR and spectro/fluorometric assays to investigate biological mechanisms of irradiation injury. • Cell-based experiments investigating the effects of low-dose gamma radiation on immune and cardiac cell metabolism and survival. The RA will assist with the maintenance of cell cultures, flow cytometry analyses, high-resolution respirometry and other biochemical analyses. • Studies investigating the impacts of lipid metabolism on cardiac ischemia-reperfusion injury, utilizing the murine ex vivo cardiac perfusion model in mice with and without genetic modification of a key enzyme that regulates polyunsaturated fatty acid metabolism. The RA will be responsible for performing the ex vivo cardiac perfusion studies, isolation of cardiac mitochondria from mice for calcium tolerance experiments. • A collaborative project with the University of Oregon investigating the impact of metformin during pregnancy on fetal development and offspring metabolic risk. RA will be responsible for performing high-resolution respirometry on cardiac samples from non-human primate subjects and data analysis from these studies.
