About The Position

The Phlebotomy Coordinator demonstrates excellent customer service performance in that his/her attitude and actions are at all times consistent with the standards contained in the Vision, Mission and Values of Covenant and the commitment to Extraordinary Care for Every Generation. The Phlebotomy Coordinator responsible for all phlebotomy activities, including patient registration, specimen collection, specimen processing and transport and waived testing. Organize workloads; assures quality of services; assures appropriate levels of supplies and recommends to the Manager, hiring, corrective action and evaluation of employees. The Phlebotomy Coordinator is expected to exercise reasonable and independent judgment in addressing problems and issues.

Requirements

  • ASCP or NCA Certification in Phlebotomy
  • Field related Associate Degree or willingness to complete from an approved accredited university
  • Phlebotomy and specimen collection, registration,
  • Personal computers, word processing spreadsheets, etc.
  • Minimum one year leadership or charge experience
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Operations of inpatient and outpatient phlebotomy
  • ABN/MSPQ requirements
  • EKG, ACT
  • Demonstrates Covenant’s leadership expectations.
  • College level Biology or Chemistry
  • Advanced PC computer skills including MS Word, Excel, and Access
  • LIS applications
  • Team building
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple projects concurrently

  • Must possess a valid driver's license and have reliable transportation.

Responsibilities

  • Contributes to organization success targets for patient satisfaction and net operating margin.
  • Attends leadership meetings and Leadership Development Training.
  • Leads projects delegated by manager
  • Demonstrates a positive attitude in the workplace showing dependability, cooperation, and desire to produce the most accurate, timely and cost effective results attainable.
  • Maintains proper communication with physicians, nursing staff, laboratory personnel, coworkers, supervision and administration.
  • Performs all necessary clerical duties including, but not limited to, answering telephones, filing, scheduling, computerized order entry, collection of draw or test fees, and registration of patient orders on LIS while maintaining excellent customer service.
  • Coaches, mentors, encourages and motivates employees.
  • Promotes employees to work together as an effective team.
  • Performs personnel scheduling.
  • Adjust staffing assignments to work volumes and changes in staff.
  • Assists in the hiring/firing process.
  • Performs employee performance appraisals.
  • Directs orientation program and trains new employees where appropriate.
  • Responsible for employee corrective action process involving Step I and Step II documentation and meetings.
  • Performs time and attendance tracking.
  • Monitors workflow and information system data.
  • Collects and maintains productivity data and monitor department productivity standards.
  • Maintains and monitors appropriate turnaround times and other quality indicators such as clotted, hemolyzed, QNS and contamination rates.
  • Assists manager in development of section budget.
  • Assists in maintenance and monitoring of budget for section.
  • Recommend equipment supply purchases.
  • Maintains section inventory and orders new supplies.
  • Monitors technical compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Participate with on call rotation, including weekdays/nights, weekends and holidays
  • Collects all specimens by venipuncture, skin puncture, nasopharyngeal and throat swabs, and other approved collection methods, upon physician order in a timely fashion utilizing proper technique.
  • Transports specimens via the most appropriate method to ensure turn-around-time is met; utilizing the pneumatic tube system, courier system, or physical transportation to the Laboratory.
  • Adheres to the laboratory quality control policies.
  • Documents all activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and maintenance performed, including troubleshooting
  • Follows laboratory procedures for specimen suitability for testing.
  • Performs waived testing authorized by the Medical Director and ordered by a physician or authorized personnel using approved methodology.
  • Capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results.
  • Immediately notifies the General Supervisor or designated Laboratory Charge Medical Technologist who will correct the problem or immediately notify the Technical Supervisor.
  • Complies with all Covenant and Laboratory policies, procedures, and safety practices.
  • Demonstrates working knowledge of appropriate safety protocol to include universal precautions, MSDS safety program, use of personal protective equipment in designated areas, and performs proper hand washing techniques.
  • Maintains records that demonstrate proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.
  • Performs EKGs, ACTs and additional clinical testing, as determined and approved by Laboratory Manager, following proper procedures and protocols.
  • Prepares section for site inspections.
  • Performs monthly HFAP rounding, documents, reports and follows up on findings
  • Develops and maintains section safety programs.
  • Performs section procedures and methods according to section protocols and ensures compliance with these protocols.
  • Promotes positive customer and employee relations.
  • Projects a favorable corporate image through professional, courteous and effective interaction with customers, staff and other agencies.
  • Communicates with appropriate managers, coordinators, physicians, nurses, technologists, phlebotomists, etc., to answer questions and act independently in resolving problems.
