About The Position

The Coordinator of Special Education (COSE) manages the continuum of services for students with disabilities, ensuring regulatory compliance, fostering family partnerships, and supporting staff with specialized instruction. They collaborate with school leadership to implement IEPs, analyze performance data, and facilitate behavioral/academic interventions.

Valid MA DESE Teaching License in Special Education (Moderate Disabilities or Severe Disabilities), MA DESE License in School Social Worker/School Adjustment Counselor, or MA DESE License in School Psychologist, or MA DESE License in Speech-Language Pathology (if applicable).
Comprehensive knowledge of and professional experience with Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) Regulations, the Individual with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.
Knowledge of and professional experience in special education, including the IEP process, special education instructional programs, collaboration with special education professionals, and building positive, supportive relationships with parents of students with special needs.
Ability to meet the CACPS Standards as outlined above.
Demonstrated capability to work collaboratively with school administrators, direct service providers, families, students, and outside partners.
Three years successful experience in an urban school system or urban human service setting.
Excellent problem solving, communication, and organizational skills.

Responsibilities

Promote improved student outcomes and deepen family engagement as essential partners in the educational process.
Ensure that students with disabilities are educated alongside their non-disabled peers in the general education setting in accordance with their IEPs.
Foster a respectful, inclusive, and engaging school climate for all students.
Provide and/or coordinate high-quality professional development and ongoing support for special education teachers and related service providers.
Coordinate and support a full continuum of placements and services for students with disabilities and students identified as at risk.
Partner with families in planning and problem-solving, and offer guidance to support student learning at home.
Manage referrals and chair all initial, reevaluation, and emergency placement team meetings; develop IEPs, including transition planning beginning at age 14; obtain parent signatures; chair annual review meetings until bargaining obligations are fulfilled; and ensure timely distribution of IEPs to teachers and service providers at the start of each school year and whenever revisions are made.
Lead and implement the MTSS/SST framework.
Serve as liaison to outside agencies delivering services ensuring effective coordination of supports.
Promote culturally responsive and culturally competent practices across all levels of the school community.
Collaborate to ensure the provision of FAPE and LRE, deliver specialized instruction and related services for students with disabilities, and support differentiated instruction for all learners.
Provide guidance to special education teachers on implementing research-based, effective instructional and social-emotional-behavioral practices.
Offer expertise in implementing the Code of Conduct as it pertains to students with disabilities.
Support ongoing regulatory compliance and continuous improvement efforts.
Provide consultation and support to special education teachers and related service providers in fulfilling their responsibilities to chair annual review meetings and develop IEPs once the Boston School Committee has met its bargaining obligations assigning these duties to Special Education Teachers and Related Service Providers.
Chair team meetings for students with disabilities placed in private settings who are being considered for a return to Boston Public Schools.
Lead Section 504 eligibility meetings and develop corresponding 504 accommodation plans.
Partner with the Principals to ensure student schedules are aligned with IEPs and 504 plans.
Collaborate with the Principals, teachers, and related service providers to oversee compliance with all state and federal special education regulations and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, including: Scheduling assessments and meetings Securing parental consent Issuing required notices and invitations to families and providers Developing, presenting, and tracking IEPs Monitoring receipt of parent signatures Collecting and reviewing progress reports from teachers and service providers Preparing and maintaining management and other required reports Managing record transfers and ensuring proper maintenance of student files
Participate, as needed, in dispute resolution sessions, mediation meetings, and due process hearings.
Support Medicaid reimbursement activities, including obtaining parent consent, completing Random Moment Time Studies, and maintaining EasyTrac documentation.
Perform additional duties consistent with this role as assigned by the Principal/Headmaster or immediate supervisor.
Engage in regular organizational meetings and professional development opportunities offered by the Office of Special Education (OSE).
Communicates clear expectations for academic, behavioral, and/or social-emotional development.
Shares practical strategies and resources to reinforce learning and growth at school and at home.
