About The Position

The Director or Coordinator of Religious Education for the Catholic Office of the Deaf is responsible for the catechesis and faith formation of children and families at St Francis Borgia Deaf Center and assists Parishes throughout the Archdiocese of Chicago to provide appropriate communication access for Deaf children in Faith Formation classes.

Requirements

  • BS or BA, with major in theology, education, pastoral studies, or relevant to position
  • Familiarity with Ministry for Deaf Catholics, including comfort with Sign Language communication.
  • Previous work in the field of education, administration, management, program/level coordinator, training of volunteer catechists, youth ministers and or other ministers
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to handle confidential and sensitive information
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced office environment within a team
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel, web content management, social media (e.g., Facebook, Twitter and Instagram) appreciated.
  • Practicing Catholic who fully adheres to and models the Church's teachings in faith and morals (Cf., "Code of Ethics for Catechetical Leaders," National Certification Standards for Lay Ecclesial Ministers. 2003. p. xxv.)
  • Registered with the Protecting God's Children/Virtus program.
  • Must be available for evening/weekend work.

Responsibilities

  • Administers Catechesis Program:
  • Recruits, trains, forms catechists;
  • Interviews all catechists and volunteers prior to working with children.
  • Creates a file for each volunteer to record contact information.
  • Collects and monitors Protecting God's Children documentation for volunteers.
  • Includes the Safe Environment curriculum in compliance with Archdiocesan requirements.
  • Ensures all catechists have the materials needed for each week's lessons.
  • Provides Catechist Formation Days of Reflection and Fostering Faith Certification course
  • Communicates with Religious Education Families monthly via electronic newsletter with additional communications as needed.
  • Organizes two retreats for each year of confirmation (7th grade & 8th grade) and days of reflection for students and parents as needed. Confirmation retreats take place in Oct. and Nov.
  • Is present Sunday mornings when Religious Ed is in session
  • Recruits, trains, forms Children's Liturgy of the Word (CLOW) leaders and supports CLOW ministry.
  • Offers ongoing formation for all Children's Liturgy of the Word Leaders.
  • Administers family preparation for First Eucharist, First Reconciliation and Confirmation for school and Religious Ed families.
  • Plans and leads parent meetings.
  • Reviews materials and calendars with school teachers and coordinates children's participation
  • Leads monthly Baptism Prep Session for New/Expectant Parents & Godparents (2-4pm, 1x month on Sundays (dates already set)).
  • Creates program for families with children age 7 and older of sacramental preparation for the Sacraments of Initiation and Reconciliation in conjunction with RCIA/RCIC
  • Works collaboratively on projects and events with other staff in support of shared mission
  • Track and submit receipts for program expenses
  • Manages duties of program assistant
  • Tracks data on number of children and families served
  • Communicates with Sacramental Prep Families (School & RE) about Sacramental Prep program requirements.
  • Coordinate with families the electronic payment of fees
